The Journal of Best Practices: A Memoir of Marriage, Asperger Syndrome, and One Man's Quest to Be a Better Husband by David Finch

The true story of how a guy learned he had Asperger's syndrome, and then starting writing instructions for himself on how to be better for his wife and children. A lot of them are obvious to the rest of us, but aren't to him. One was "If she's singing along with a song on the radio, don't change the station." He put these notes everywhere until he learned them. And it worked.

I was trying to read Insurgent, but I couldn't get into it. I set it aside.

I hate that I missed out on this when it had a wider release. I'd be very interested in knowing if it would be worth shelling out $35. I'm certainly a fan of his.

I finally finished Ian M. Banks - Excession. Like most of the others in that series, the first half was kind of a slog to get through, although the last half really takes off. I'll probably get back to that series at some point, but I'm going to try something new for a while.

I haven't finished it yet, but I've been making my way through at a decent pace, and I can say it's already been worth the money.

My favorite part of the book has been the copyright page, which says "fuck ISBN numbers" where the ISBN number should be.

New Bucket List item: Read the 14 Fleming Bonds the first week of April (my birthday week) every year. One down, 13 to go.

Really enjoyed the novel, but was surprised by the amount of misogyny (a sign of the times, I know), and how inexperienced Bond is in the first installment. (He has only two killings under his belt at this point.) Really enjoyed this fallible, mistake-prone version of Bond versus the Connery/Moore/Brosnan supermen. (Craig is perfect in the role, IMO.)

Just finished Gone Girl.

The ending was hard to accept which is the very reason why it was really good. All stories shouldn't be wrapped up in a nice bow.

Now I'm reading Nerd Do Well by Simon Pegg.

Finally finished Dances with Dragons. I read the last 3 books back to back to back, and it was a struggle to get through DWD. It's not a bad book, but definitely not as good as previous ones (although the fourth book was lacking as well).

And speaking Gone Girl above, this book apparently gets compared to it a lot, so next up for me is:

Re: What are you reading? (April 2014)

Just finished book V of The lord of the Rings. Starting the last book now. It made me think that Sauron had such an overwhelming advantage that even after the siege of Gondor was broken he could have taken the city and killed everyone before Frodo completed his task. What would have happened then? He should have just mounted a guard on Mount Doom as the only way to destroy the ring and then gone on to beat the west with conventional forces.

I also think there were some contemporary influences at work. Theodon was Hitler for one. Juliet Romeo Romeo, wherefore art thou?

Since I still have Under the Skin fresh in the brain might as well go to the source:
