Re: What are you reading? (March 2014)

I recently finished reading "Old Man's War" and really enjoyed it. Hitting Book 2 soon.

Meanwhile I'm listening to this on Audible and loving life:

VERY highly recommended. I've always been enamored with Mozart's string quartets, so this is hitting my sweet spot. Greenberg is an AMAZING lecturer. Knowledgeable, but extremely energetic and entertaining. He almost brings a Wallace Shawn-like enthusiasm to his lectures.

Finshed:

Don't Poke the Bear by John Locke

I liked it. Interested in seeing where the next book goes since there was quite an upheaval in the story.

Just Started:

Insurgent by Veronica Roth

Not sure why I don't read more mysteries, since I like watching movies in that genre enough. Especially since the written form allows for things to be done with mystery stories that just can't be done with just visuals. Especially in the case of this story, which I presume is being made into a major motion picture:
Spoiler:
A movie would lose the book's interlocking of Amy's diary with Nick's life "post-disappearance". Not to mention being tough to pull off the deception that Amy did with her diary.
The twists of the story kept me going even though almost all of the characters weren't very likable (entirely by design though). I'm seeing some readers aren't happy with the ending. But I thought it was just fine.
Spoiler:
Amy and Nick (plus baby) living unhappily ever after, in their twisted ways perfect for each other. That's going to be one messed up kid though. I guess people not happy with the ending were looking for everything to be wrapped up nicely. Which isn't how real life usually works out.

Finished reading this. I didn't like the movie at all, but someone convinced me to try the book, and, well, I didn't like it either. That middle section in Hawaii was pure torture.
