I'm only about 5 chapters in, but I like it a lot so far. It jumps back and forth between a first-person narration by the husband and (older) diary entries from the wife.

That's a hard question to answer without giving spoilers. All I can say is that it has a mindfuck of a twist and a very polarizing ending. I liked it a lot except the ending. And I hear the movie is changing the ending, fwiw.

I set Serena down. I read the first chapter and couldn't get into it. I'll try to borrow it from the library again another time. I'm in a John Locke mood so:

Finally got this one from the library:

I've been enjoying it so far, although I did find the middle section a bit slower than expected.

Took me about 3 months to slog through the whole thing (~1700 pages). I should've bailed after book 1. My reading time is far too valuable to spend on things I don't particularly enjoy. Maybe the whole "Alternative History" genre is not for me, since this was supposed to be one of its masterpieces. Genuinely interesting idea - about what would happen if modern Nantucket got teleported to the Bronze Age. But got bogged down in tedious minutiae (the author clearly didn't want any of his research to go to waste) and unbelievable characters/situations. It started out ok but went gradually downhill. And if you think Stephen King has had some let-down endings, they're nothing compared to the heap of shit Stirling unloads on his readers after they made it through the whole trilogy. It's almost like the author himself was getting bored with the whole thing but realized that the way the plot developed it would take hundreds of pages to resolve. So he just said "screw it" and undid everything in a couple of pages.

If you look at how long it took me to finish this book (compared to my last post in this thread) that probably says it all :) And I'm perfectly the demographic for this book, having been a teenager in the 80s and been into all the games, movies, tv, etc that this author liked.

I'd be curious to hear how readers oblivious to 80s culture would respond to this. Though that probably accounts for the smattering of negative reviews on Amazon.

This was a great novel and I recommend it for anyone who likes police procedurals. It kind of reminded me of One Deadly Summer (also a french novel).
