Re: What are you reading? (March 2012)

Original Edition of edited Schmitz Stories, Unedited by Eric Flint.

Baen Books published the complete James H Schmitz about a decade ago, but some people were unhappy that the stories were edited. So the editor Eric Flint posted the unedited versions of five stories to which he had made substantial changes.

Sadly, I have now read everything that Schmitz wrote.

Since Baen is cool, most of the Schmitz books are available for free.

Finished Cities of the Plain. McCarthy is a master. The scene near the end between
Spoiler:
John Grady and Eduardo
is one of the most powerful "violent" scenes I have read.

Enjoyed it. The basic premise is wisely used only as a way to show different reactions from characters on a personal level in the midst of a life-changing event on a macro scale. Thoughtfully done.

Still reading Bukowski's "Women," but got slightly derailed.

Knocked these two out in the last day or two:

Interesting read that's now gotten me curious about 1st edition books. The book thief's perspective on what he does is interesting and warped - although his tales get a bit repetitive mid-way through the book.
