I gave up on A Game of Thrones. I got 400 pages into it and it still wasn't holding my interest.

It was a decent read, but the last third of the book felt rushed and seemed a little implausible.

Jasper Fforde's Shades of Grey (2009)

A dystopian future where your ability to see color determines your social standing in life. Funny and satirical, and just keeps gaining steam as the book goes on. Good read.

Simon Lelic's A Thousand Cuts (2010)

Also recommended.

Percival Everett's American Desert (2004)

A man is driving to the ocean, where he plans to kill himself. On the way there, he is decapitated in a car accident. Three days later, at his funeral, he comes back to life, causing people to believe he is either the Second Coming or Satan himself.

I'm also working through Robopocalypse which has to be one of the most disappointing books in recent memory. I'm halfway through and so far it's just filled with various introductory chapters that are not tied into each other.

I was disappointed with it as well, the stories will merge but it really doesn't get much better. I guess the good news is there isn't much chance of the movie being much worse than the book.

Lattethunder, if you like Scalzi's books be sure to read "Agent to the Stars". I thought it was better than all the Old Man War's series. You can read it free here. http://scalzi.com/agent/

The Spy's Guide to Santa Fe and Albuquerque was great. Now I want to read some of the books from the bibliography.
