My copy of Eddie Trunk's book just arrived from Amazon.

A great read for fans so far. I'm reading it in between chapters of "Wise Man's Fear", which started out like gangbusters and hit a pretty big sag in the midsection. Starting to pick up, and I'm praying there's a payoff here.

^ What'd you think? I read the follow-up (Babylon Nights) a couple months back. Thought both were decent (didn't knock my socks off).

FYI, Daniel is Johnny's brother.

I thought Loser's Town was good. Solid first book. I liked the dialog a lot. Could have maybe tightened the book a little. I thought a little too much background given on one of the main bad guy's thugs (Potts) that could have been taken out to tighten the story. I will read #2 in the series (Babylon Nights).

I did know that Daniel Depp is Johnny's brother. I don't think they explicitly say that on the book cover, which surprises me. Why not, free publicity. Of course, Joe Hill doesn't say on his books that he is Stephen King's son.

I saw the movie of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo last year, so I probably could have skipped the book. But, I wanted to read it to see what was left out or changed.

It was a slow build up through the beginning of the book and I almost stopped. But, the story picked up, just as it had in the movie.

The second book I'm finding it harder to read. People have commented that the second and third books continue on in intensity from the latter half of the first book. I'm about 35% through Girl Who Played With Fire and found the beginning tedious and had me thinking less of Salander. Where I stopped reading last night I believe is when the story becomes more interesting, so I'm hoping that there is a payoff for the first 1/3 of the book.
Spoiler:
I stopped reading just after Salander was attacked outside her old apartment. And then later Mikael discovers the couple that wrote the book and thesis on the sex trafficking ring murdered in their apartment.

The cover on the Containment book looked interesting to me. Looked it up on Amazon and it sounds like a pretty good read. Reviews have been favorable. The clincher, it was $0.99 for the Kindle version. Bought and added it to my "to-read" pile.

All of those things happened for me too, except buying the kindle version....cause I don't have one. But that dudes stuff sounds right up my alley. Thanks for bringing him to my attention superdeluxe!

Re: What are you reading? March 2011

I finished "Wise Man's Fear". Beautifully written. Fantastic prose. Wonderful humor and fine details in one of the most amazingly realized worlds in all of modern Fantasy. Too bad that, storywise, the 2nd half of the book was such a crushing disappointment. One missed opportunity after another. At around the halfway point, Kvothe goes on one unrelated tangent after another that doesn't further the plot or the overall storyline one damn bit. And then it's all wrapped up by the end with NOTHING changed in the grand scheme of the trilogy. I couldn't put it down, because it the prose was a pleasure to read, but like a good cocktease it brought you to the brink and then pulled away at the last second. Repeatedly.
