Re: What are you reading? (August 2010)

Ginwen, you've read five Ender books since 8/8? Gotta love the summer! I just finished Ender's Shadow (first time) -- Card really did a good job of making a familiar story (I have read Ender's Game) not seem too repetitive. I actually really enjoyed knowing what would happen, but seeing Bean's perspective. I thought the stories were cross-tied in some clever and unexpected ways.

edit: I've read Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead, and now Ender's Shadow from the Bean side of the Universe. Is Shadow of the Hegemon as good? What else would get your high recommenders?

The Passage by Justin Cronin.

and

The Stand by Stephen King.

Never read the stand and since The Passage is apparently drawing a lot of comparisons..thought I'd read 'em back to back.

I read that back in December, I think it was, and also loved it. The second half of the book was kind of odd to read; I didn't expect a Western! I've read Ian Fleming's James Bond books on an annual schedule, and have kept to the same schedule with Edgar Rice Burroughs's Barsoom series since starting that in '08. Not sure if I'll keep Holmes to a once-per-year pace or not, since so much of the canon are short stories. I could restrict myself to reading a set of short stories as they were originally collected in book form together, I guess.

Also, according to my blog stats, someone actually followed the link to my review of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from this thread. Not sure who you are or what you got out of it (since you didn't leave any comments), but thanks!

I've had this book on my shelf for about 10 years now and have never read it. So many people have raved about it but I just never seemed to want to read it.

I just started the book and have read about 120 pages so far. I'm really enjoying it more than I expected. UPDATE: Finished on 8/15 - enjoyed it but not sure if am going to continue with the series at this time.

Next up for me is another that I have had sitting on the shelf for a while...

I've got this book I've been trying to read for awhile, but I keep getting pissed off at it and putting it down. Definitely a fantastic and highly informative read, but it's definitely not a pleasant read.

EDIT: okay I can't post URL's yet, so that means no images.

The book is called "Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension of American Racism" by James Loewen.

Incredibly researched and detailed.

They're pretty quick reads, and I just stay up too late.

Ender's Shadow is much better than Shadow of the Hegemon in my opinion. Just based on reading them this time (since most of them I read as they came out and never since), the other one I liked a lot was First Meetings in the Enderverse, at least the first two stories, which are about stuff before Ender's Game. We'll see once I finish them all though. There's none I haven't liked at least a little so far--the first time I read them I don't think I liked Speaker for the Dead, Children of the Mind, and Xenocide much, but that was a long time ago so I barely remember them, so hopefully they're better this time.

Ditto. Just finished the first one and will try to read the second in time for the final book's release as well.

I actually had to look up the summary of the book because it was such an abrupt change. The one that I read was a Project Guttenberg ebook, so I thought that something might have gotten screwed up. I thought that it was fascinating way to flesh out the backstory though.

Going to go through the Scott Pilgrim comics before I see the movie, and am going to continue with the Sherlock Holmes series:

It's been out in the UK for over a month now. The same thing happened with the last Dexter novel as well, in addition to some others that I've read in the past.

Just started reading Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle. I've seen the Tim Burton film, but nothing from the previous film franchise.

Rather than post all of the covers, I'll just say that I read all of the Scott Pilgrim comics and really enjoyed them. Definitely looking forward to trying to catch the movie in the next week or so. Finished Sign of the Four as well, which definitely wasn't as good as the first Holmes novel.

Next up is probably:

Were the SP books that quick of a read?
