Did DVDTalk ever have a Book Club (aka wanna start one?)

So wanna start a book club? I was thinking of joining a bunch online either at Goodreads or one of the other sites but figured why not here.

So anyone in? We can nominate and vote on the books for the month, alternating Fiction and Non-Fiction and have a discussion thread that actually can be easy to follow since we will all be working on the book at the same time.

Great way to expand our horizons.

Anyone interested?

I'd be interested, depending on the chosen book.

I think the point is to read stuff you never would otherwise and discuss what you think about it. Plus it would go to a vote.

Lets start off and do some NOMINATIONS for June's FICTION book and Ill post a poll later...even if we start with only a few members, I think it could grow nicely

I'd be in ... I'm *just* starting "Kaboom", which is a blog-turned-book by some Army guy in Afghanistan (or is it Iraq?) ... first 5 pages or so are good...?

I'm in, assuming the books are something I can get at the local library.

I'd be down as long as the books don't turn into Oprah book club fodder. I don't want a Million Little Pieces repeat.

Re: Did DVDTalk ever have a Book Club (aka wanna start one?)

I think we should start on 6/15 and run to 7/15 to give everyone time to finish what they got, find the book, and aquire it.

So lets everyone nominate an ACCESSIBLE, available at the library, FICTION book.

I will tell you that on my Kindle now waiting to read is MAJOR PETTIGREW'S LAST STAND...THE HELP...and THE KITE RUNNER (This is what just happens to be there...you wanna go pulp, im down, horror, lets go..etc..)

Thoughts for the poll? (If something else wins I will get it however)

Eventually We could just have the regulars nominate the book, but for now we'll plan on a poll

I'd like to do this, just probably not this month. I'm up for anything.

Agreed. No books that are described as "life-changing," "endearing," or "heart-breaking" -- no Nicholas Sparks, Tuesdays with Morrie, or stories of dead girls in heaven.

Since this is DVD Talk, why not focus on books that are either about Hollywood or are the basis for major motion pictures (new or classic)?

OK 9 people sounds cool

In honor of Sean I nominate Shutter Island for the book of the month poll. Feel free to chime in.

I'm in as long as it's something I can stand to read. I want to read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo so I nominate that.

Already read those two

Regardless, if one is chosen, I'll play along.

Re: Did DVDTalk ever have a Book Club (aka wanna start one?)

I'm in also. I just hope whatever we decide on I can get on my Kindle.

I nominate:
The Help
The Lost City of Z
Middlesex
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
The Historian
House of Leaves
or
Needful Things

Those are just a couple I have been wanting to read for a while so I thought I would throw them out there as possibilities.

Re: Did DVDTalk ever have a Book Club (aka wanna start one?)

A couple of suggestions:

Hick - Andrea Portes
Under The Dome - Stephen King (any King books really)
Mystic River - Dennis Lehane
Presumed Innocent/Innocent - Scott Turow
The Other Wes Moore - Wes Moore
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks - Rebecca Skloot
The Calling - Inger Ash Wolfe

For the books that I've read that have been suggested, I love the Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larrson, was disappointed in Lost World of Z (until the end), enjoyed Shutter Island (until the end) and wouldn't really recommend House of Leaves or Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, since they seem to be more niche books that I don't think everyone would enjoy. Of course, these are only my personal opinions.

Re: Did DVDTalk ever have a Book Club (aka wanna start one?)

I'm interested.

Currently reading The Girl Who Played With Fire - probably planning the next book to complete the trilogy after this is finished.

Re: Did DVDTalk ever have a Book Club (aka wanna start one?)

I also was going to suggest something by Cory Doctorow, who gives away most of his stuff free online. I've yet to read any of his books, but I've heard good things (although I think that he skews towards the young adult audience).

Re: Did DVDTalk ever have a Book Club (aka wanna start one?)

Movieking...

Problem with Doctrow is im not sure everyone's using an e-reader

Otherwise I suggest we Read MAKERS since it would be nice to kick it off with zero cost to the members
