Stephen King Fans - which of you enjoyed "THE TOMMYKNOCKERS?" Who hated it?

I tried this book back in the late 80s, and thought it "too wordy," for lack of a better term. I just couldn't get past all the non-Bobbi Anderson takes a stumble portion of the book. I got my teeth stuck in that part, and couldn't swing over to Jim Gardener's tale at the Poetry Caravan, and his obsession over nuclear power. I wanted more of Bobbi digging. Alas, the stuff about Gardener bothered me, and I abandoned ship.

Early 90s, I'm all "caught up" on Stephen King books, and now I'm looking for something new to read. Re-discovered The Tommyknockers, started reading, and reading, and reading. It was like a drug, and I loved every wordy minute of it.

Sometimes you have to give things a second chance. (I had to give "Braveheart" three tries, and loved it on the third.)

I read this when I was a teenager and liked it a lot. I think it was just my 3rd or 4th King book, behind Dark Half, Needful Things and the updated Stand.

King's worst book. IMS, this is the book that King says he was so stoned he doesn't even remember writing.

That's a case of the Onion copying reality. If you read On Writing, he discusses being such a coke-head in the '80s that he really doesn't remember some of the stuff he wrote, including one whole novel -- I think it was Tommyknockers, but I don't have a copy of On Writing handy to check.

On Writing mentioned him not remembering writing Cujo, which was almost at the start of the 80's. He further said, in reflection, that he wishes he did because he really kind of liked the story.

Stephen King became rich and famous in the early 70s, and we all know that the late 70s had permissiveness when it came to coke (discos, doing lines in public while sitting at the table, etc), so the habit probably became more intense by the 80s, and King became one of the many, many addicts. Thank God, though, that it didn't destroy him like it did so many other Americans.

Up until King's accident, Tommyknockers was the only King book I hadn't read. Still haven't, and I'm not quite sure why.

Now I have Buick, Cell, Lisey, Duma and Sunset to catch up on.

I read Tommyknockers a loooooooooong time ago (circa '88 or '89), but I remember enjoying it as much as any other King stuff from that time period.

On the other hand, a year or so ago I started King's Duma Key and just could not connect with it, and bailed after about 150 pages. It's on my "revisit at some point in the future" list....

I'm not really a fan. I've read it a couple times and just don't really enjoy it that much. One of the very few from that era that I didn't like.

I've not read much King - maybe four or five novels. Tommyknockers was probably the first of his that I read, 22 years ago, and was not quite what I expected (being as much sci-fi as horror as I recall) but didn't put me off reading several more shortly afterwards, including IT.

I've read most of his books and The Tommyknockers was good but not great.
