I'm back from vacation, so here are some quick impressions:

LOVED The Name of the Wind. Interesting deep characters, extremely well written, lots of thought behind the book. Rothfuss was here in town yesterday, so I bought a hardcover and had him sign it. He's an interesting person. Not what I was expecting.

The Warded Man was also very good. I'll definitely buy the next book in the series. It was a little cliche in points, and I'm guessing that the author has had a girlfriend cheat on him at least once, because his portrayal of many of the women was...interesting. It was an excellent beach read though. Not too complex, but not complete fluff either.

I couldn't make it past 3 chapters of Lies of Locke Lamora. The author's constant use of contemporary profanity, in addition to throwing the word "savvy" at the end of questions like he was channeling Johnny Depp just had me rolling my eyes. I really don't understand all of the good buzz for this one.

I'm not sure what I'll read next. I ran out of books on vacation, so I started rereading the Song of Ice and Fire series.

I really enjoyed The Ghost, and would like to see the movie as well (The Ghost Writer). Based on recommendations in this thread, as well as the Stephen King Article from a while back over at EW.com, I've started the first Elvis Cole book from Robert Crais:

Not as funny as some of his more recent books but still an entertaining read.

It feels like a German expressionist film -- and not just Metropolis, which is the obvious point of comparison, but things like The Golem and Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. It's also more literary than your typical science fiction novel, with the focus more on what technology means than what it does.

Awesome! Now I'm jealous of you getting to meet him, I always read his blog and he seems like a really cool guy. I can't wait for the second book.

And we agree on Locke Lamora, I think I posted here how much I disliked the book & couldn't care less about the empty characters. Its why I hate 95% of the fantasy I read (& I read a lot of fantasy) & why I love books like the Kingkiller Chronicle when an author can bring in a fresh new fantasy character.

I got a couple of chapters into The Monkey's Raincoat, but I've put that on hold so I can try to finish:
