Thanks! This just pushed me over the edge. I'll be ordering my Kindle tomorrow.

This is simply the greatest invention since the Tivo.

I'm waiting for Nook 2, which supposedly is close to release. I found the original Nook to be much better than the Kindle 2. Skipping Kindle 3 for the latest Nook. It better not let me down.

Has there been any updates on the Nook 2? When I search for it, all I find is articles from this spring which say it would be out in Sept/Oct. We're getting close to the holiday season and with B&N's financial trouble, I'm wondering if we'll ever see it released.

Taking the eReader plunge. Ordered one of the new wifi Kindles for my wife for her birthday. If she (I) likes it, may have her get me one for my birthday in December. :)

Amazon Announces Ebook Lending

Very interesting news.
Of course it comes with limitations.
I guess this is Amazon's way of dealing w/ the rising cost of ebooks.

It isn't due to costs - it is a direct response to the Nook lending feature. Aren't the restrictions the same as on the Nook?

The Nook Color is supposed to be announced on 10/26. Supposed to be an Android based, full-color touch screen for $249

Too bad all signs point to a LCD screen.

The Nook Color has an LCD screen.
So can someone explain the difference between reading from a Nook Color and a small $300 laptop with a much larger gb and ram?

Form factor. The better question is, "What's the difference between reading on a Nook Color and an iPad or other tablet?"

I really don't see this as a viable ebook reader unless you only read at home. I can understand how a tablet can supplement an e-ink device, but those have other functionality that make up for their shorter battery life and the fact that you can't use them in bright sunlight, but a dedicated ebook reader with 8 hours of battery (supposedly) and an LCD screen is a joke.

It is basically a crippled android tablet, as it wont have access to the Android App store

Nook 2 is a big disappointment. I was hoping for an upgraded Nook, but it's some sort of deficient hybrid. Oh well. The original Nook is better than Kindle 3 anyway, so I guess I'll purchase one. There's some firmware update coming in Nov. that should make it even better.

I just bought the 3G nook, really enjoying it so far. The only thing is that there are so many editions of many classic books, that it's hard to know which one to pick.

Anything that I ever saw about Nook 2 was talking about the Nook with wifi only, not an updated Nook.

I like that the Nook has a built in chess game, takes a microSD card, and the use of epub format. I've looked at the Kindle 3 screen, it is significantly better than the Nook. It has more contrast between text and background.

Well, I like K3's size, contrast, and weight, but ultimately, since I use these things to read, the Nook allows me to do it more and in a much more affordable way, I've found. The Philly Free Library has been awesome with the Nook.

I have to admit that I've fallen a bit behind on what is available now. For Christmas, I'd like to get my wife an e-reader that will also let her surf the web, which I believe most do now (not sure about the Sony models though). Color would definitely be a pro, so would that limit me to a Nook and the Pandigital? I was seriously thinking about the Pandigital, but the reviews were not great, although a software fix seems to have made a big difference. Any others I should know about?

If you insist on buying those DRM-infested ebooks, but not just get a netbook to do it on using Amazon or whoever's Windows software? A Netbook would have a bigger screen and do anything a computer does, versus spending a ton on a device that's just for reading books. I don't get it, especially with the deals they always have on netbooks/laptops this time of year.

I have a netbook, and I'd never read an ebook on it. The difference between reading from a netbook and an e-reader is like night and day.

BUT, the poster wanted color, which means LCD, so basically a netbook would be better

although
