Anyone know anything about book reconstruction?

Just wondering if anyone out there has gone through this at all. I've come into possession of a few books that are almost 200 yrs old and in need of repair, and I'd like anyone out there who knows anything to give me any pointers/things to look out for; recommendations of bookbinders you've dealt with are always welcome.

Lastly - I've heard that calfskin looks great on books but is undesireable compared to goatskin because it's 'weak', whereas goatskin is 'better' - can anyone explain this more fully to me?

Thanks for any help
