Prolific novelist and "ER" creator Michael Crichton has passed away. He was 66.

Perhaps best known for being the author of Jurassic Park and its sequel The Lost World, which were turned into a hugely successful movie franchise, his numerous books have sold over 150 million copies worldwide.

In what his family calls an unexpected death, it was revealed that he was waging a private battle against cancer.

"While the world knew him as a great storyteller that challenged our preconceived notions about the world around us -- and entertained us all while doing so -- his wife Sherri, daughter Taylor, family and friends knew Michael Crichton as a devoted husband, loving father and generous friend who inspired each of us to strive to see the wonders of our world through new eyes," his family tells ET. "He did this with a wry sense of humor that those who were privileged to know him personally will never forget."

One of my favorite authors. I have all of this books in first edition hardcovers. An unexpected and devastating loss.

2008 is officially the crappiest year for losing great people, and this one spans books, film, and television. :(

Just finished reading The Andromeda Strain about a month ago.

Prayers for his family. I'll miss his work.

Unexpected and unfortunate. He really did a good job at putting a pop culture spin on some pretty complex ideas.

Long time fan, first read The Andromeda Strain in high school and enjoyed many of his other works. Always sad to see someone go that could have had several more years of productive life.

Someone started a thread in the Films section (funny how so many see him as a film guy and and not writer first), and I am really saddened by this. I know he was about to have another book come out next month, I just read this from abcnews.com - hope it isn't true cause that would really suck, unless he wasn't finished with it -

"A new novel by Crichton had been tentatively scheduled to come next month, but publisher HarperCollins said the book was postponed indefinitely because of his illness."

As I mentioned before, I'll be reading Travels again in memory. Great, great autobiography of him.

Posted in the other thread, but very sad indeed. His most recent book I read was his latest HCC installment -- I plan on circling-back to some of his older novels pretty soon.

I saw the headline and it was like a punch to the gut. I had no idea he was even sick. He's easily my most favorite author, and I had always hoped I'd one day get the chance to even briefly meet him. He'll be greatly missed.

I'll always remember him for creating ER, but obviously he had a ton of amazing books as well.

I remember him on Time magazine soon after ER came out. The article says he bears the distinction of being the only one who's had a #1 movie, #1 TV show and #1 book at the exact same time. I've always wondered if there were any plans to develop more of his books into film. I remember reading Airframe thinking it would be a pretty entertaining movie.

That is some bad news, I have read all his books and was eagerly waiting for his new book. I even bought the Timeline PC game.

The new date, according to Amazon, is May 4, 2009.

I read almost all of his books. I'll miss him most for his opposition to the catastrophic anthropogenic global warming (CAGW) alarmists. See State of Fear.

The one you can expect Hollywood not to make is State of Fear.

I think, to sort of honor him in a bizarre way, I'll read State of Fear this month. Not sure how I stand on that issue, but he was passionate about it.

Did not know about his quiet battle with cancer... Thank you for all of the great stories -- you will be missed.

Doing a quick check on IMDB it looks like Westworld is being remade.

I remember reading some years ago that Airframe was being made into a movie starring Demi Moore, but it fell through. Haven't heard anything about is since. I do remember being pleasantly surprised after reading it and hoping a movie would be made from it.


I've read most of his stuff and will eventually get to all of it. The last new book of his I read was Prey, since then I've gone back to some of his earlier work. I'll get to reading State of Fear and Next soon.
