I'm not reading anything... but my wife just got Stephanie Myers' "Breaking Dawn" in the mail today and she's already up to page 200.

"Breaking Dawn" is last of four books about a girl named Bella and a vampire named Edward.

I guess it's pretty big.

Her and her friends had a launch party last night.

Weird.

;)

The Vanshing Act of Esme Lennox
The Girl Who Stopped Swimming

I read some of the Nancy Drew books a couple of years ago and strongly disliked the high-proof snobbery. Try to find the old editions of Nancy Drew ghostwritten by Margaret Wirt. They're more like adventure stories. The unedited Nancy Drew is in print from Applewood Books.

In 1959, Grosset & Dunlap began publishing a new The Secret of the Old Clock and The Hidden Staircase, Shorter in length, they and all subsequent "updated" titles bore the inscription on their copyright page, "This new book for today's readers is based on the original of the same title." Wirt's earliest writing of the Syndicate-owned titles was being phased out. On the average of two volumes per year, all original Drew titles by her have been rewritten to remove what the Syndicate called "objectionable material." The character of Nancy Drew also underwent a dramatic change: the strong-willed teen was having her personality diluted, causing her to lose her characteristic independence.

Some essays are funnier than others, but overall I'm liking this book.

Travis McClain 08-05-08 09:24 PM

Just finished:

Marjane Satrapi's The Complete Persepolis [autobiographical graphic novel]
David Halberstam's The Teammates
Frank Darabont's Indiana Jones and the City of the Gods [rejected script]

I read each in a single night last week, and oddly enough I realized all of them were leant to me by friends.

Started:

Max Allan Collins's Dick Tracy [novelization of 1990 film, which I found used, for a quarter]

On Deck:

Ian Fleming's You Only Live Twice. Ever since I got into Bond, I have allowed myself just one Ian Fleming Bond novel a year, and I'm just about out of willpower to hold off on reading this year's allotment.

I was about to pick this up based on King's accolade -- maybe I should rethink that.

Get ready for your wife to be PISSED!!

1000 1* reviews on amazon with the recurring theme that the ending is a cop out and ruins the series

Ditto.
I too read King's gushy writeup in EW and was intrigued. But after a 100 pages or so I couldn't muster the interest to stay interested (despite being set largely in a strip club).
