Recommend good beach reading
Needs some recommendations for a good, entertaining novel for the beach.
Open to sci-fi (preferably hard sci-fi, I like Bova, Clarke), suspense/thrillers, mystery, horror. Not interested in non-fiction, romance, political thrillers, anything religious (I'd just like to turn the brain off and be entertained...kinda the equivilant of a popcorn flick). Not too long, need a relatively quick read. Any ideas? |
You're going to read at the beach....?

This thread should be moved to Book Talk, where it will die a slow but painless death.

I believe there was a thread on this same subject last year. You might check the archives.

Every girl that comes in to my office and looks at my book collection asks me about "Water for Elephants" I would recommend that.

Old Man's War by John Scalzi is a fast fun read.

On a predominantly beach-oriented holiday, a few weeks ago, I read a crime thriller, a historical fantasy, a science fantasy and a straight science fiction novel.
I'm not sure it matters so much what you are reading (or where) but that you are reading. For my part I can certainly say that having the time and energy to read those four novels was a much-appreciated part of my holiday and travel time. Some years ago, while in Singapore and then travelling through Malaysia and Indonesia I read a fascinating travel guide and a novel set in wartime Singapore called The Singapore Grip. Neither were my usual fare but I got a lot out of each. |
I always recommend Frederik Pohl, especially Gateway.
