Here are 3:

Michael Connelly
George Pelecanos
Lawrence Block

Thinking about who'd fill out the next two slots, my choices seem very arbitrary. I can come up with a lot of names, but haven't been able to choose just 2 essentials. Those 3, though, are definites.

Not really sure about a 5th. But, if Tim Dorsey stopped writing books, I may have to give up reading altogether.

I'll echo some people here, with some of my own...the world is a better place because of these gentlemen...

1) Daniel Woodrell (Missouri noir; check out Give Us a Kiss)
2) Chuck Palahniuk (chaotic, gross-out, mind-bender bliss)
3) Jonathan Carroll (a little bit of magic in the everyday)
4) Cormac McCarthy (gorgeous, elemental stuff)
5) Sam Harris/Richard Dawkins (i.e., voices of reason)

Fading stars (but would otherwise have made this list):
Stephen King
Thomas Harris
Joe R. Lansdale

Up-and-comers (will be on the list in a few years)
Duane Swierczynski
Charlie Huston
Christopher Moore
