When you are reading paper books, do you insist on having a dictionary at your side at all times?

Both the Gizmodo and Engadget reviews agree that currently the software is supbar, and the usability of the Nook will depend on updates from B&N.

Obviously not when traveling, but at home I like to have a pocket dictionary around. It was invaluable during THE BAROQUE CYCLE.

New York Times article from their Tech guy just killed the Nook. As expected, B&N have a lot of bugs to work out.

That's such a shame. It's an e-reader. It shouldn't be that difficult to work out.

Here's the New York Times review. I didn't have to make an account to look at it so hopefully you don't either. He's pretty unimpressed.

He seems down on e-ink in general. Does that reviewer like any of the e-readers?

I think the reviewer is right that the Nook touchscreen and wifi are useless.

I didn't know the kindle could adjust the screen to have the wide view and read text out loud. Plus the longer battery life. Seems like the kindle is the winner, esp. it being 2nd gen now. Both still have things to improve.

Wow, the new BN pc reader v2 is horrible, completely different from the first, which was good. Worst thing is that credit card number has to be entered AGAIN after the update. That was the last straw, good thing I only got the free ebooks.

Nook got an OTA update. I've heard it runs a bit faster now, but it's nothing earth shattering (which would be dangerous).

At least it seems most of the issues with the Nook are software related, so they can be fixed with updates (hopefully). Personally, the launch it has just really soured me on the product. It is obvious B&N were never ready with the product or the demane so they should not have launched it when they did.

Clearly they were trying to cut in to Amazon's holiday Kindle sales. Also, they just sent out a $100 GC for anyone who ordered a Nook and expected to get it by Christmas but won't be, so at least they're acknowledging they messed up.

Also, a homebrew community has already popped up for Nook. I finally saw one in a B&N store and messed around with it, found it to be way too slow and not intuitive. So unless the software really picks up, I will wait for yet another ereader from somewhere else.

That's fairly nice of them to offer the $100 GC. I understand their motivation to push the Nook out when they did, I just don't agree with it, & find it half-assed. If they focused on the product content & quality, it wouldn't matter what time of year it was released. A good product (especially a niche electronic one) will catch on & create buzz no matter what.

Personally, I just want an eReader for reading, so I've decided the Kindle is just perfect for me right now. I'm fairly certain I'm getting once for X-mas, which will keep me happy until the Apple tablet is ready.

I saw a Kindle for the first time in person today. The guy in from of me in Subway was reading a book in line. I was shocked at how thin it was. Seems pretty cool.

Wife got me a Kindle, totally unexpected. It's so cool, off to project Gutenberg!

Don't go to project gutenberg if you can help it - a lot of their proofreading and formatting leaves much to be desired. Sites like www.mobileread.com and www.feedbooks.net have thousands of PD texts in mobi formatted files and omnibus volumes.

Plus the forums on mobileread are quite helpful.

Congrats on the kindle!

Michael

Did Amazon disable text to speech? Every book i click on does not have it!

fiver 12-25-09 12:19 PM

Re: Amazon Kindle - ebooks & readers v "traditional"

Text to Speech is enabled or disabled on a per book basis based on publisher request.

There are programs out there that allow the text to speech bit to be enabled I believe.

Well, I don't need to worry about debating over which eReader to get anymore. I unwrapped these this morning (already started playing with the kindle). . .

You got both? Damn.

Your family want to adopt a public school teacher by the name of miyu for the holidays? ;)

You got both? Sheesh. Willing to part with your Nook? If so, PM me a price.

Gutenberg formatting doesn't bother be. Thanks for the other links though, always great!
