Rare/Old Books

Does anyone know anything about rare (or at least old) books? My mom gave me a bunch of old books and she said some of them were valuable, but I don't really know anything about old books - I've read most of them but in much newer editions. Or maybe if anyone knows a web site that could help, you could tell me.

Here's a list:
Volumes 3,4 and 5 of My Bookhouse first printing (1920+1921) by Olive Beaupre Miller

The Grapes of Wrath I think its the eighth printing - 1939

Hard Lines by Ogden Nash, first printing 1921

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, first printing 1965

There are also some really old paper backs, but none of them look like much.

I just checked my favorite online used book resource -- bibliofind -- and discovered that it has been assimilated by Amazon (surprise). When it was independent, it allowed you to search by condition and edition. Much of that functionality is now lacking, but it would probably still be a good starting point.

The first edition of In Cold Blood is probably pretty valuable, particularly if it's in good condition. It's also a hell of a good book.

First editions are the most desired collectable. Unless the book was/is something very special I'm not sure that anything after a first edition is that valuable?

Find a used bookstore in your sity and call them up.

I checked ebay, just for an idea of valuableness, and was pretty disappointed - it looks like the new editions of these books cost more than the original ones are worth. Of course, that is just ebay. Depressing though - that original literature isn't more valuable.

Well, if you really want to sell them for big bucks on Ebay, check the books again...you may find that they have been "signed by the author" (cough cough).

On Ebay, it's definitely a buyer's market, as far as books are concerned.

I was once looking for a reading copy of certain Darwin book, and ended up buying a hundred year old copy for less than the price of a new one. (Of course, it wasn't a 1st edition of Origin, that'd set me back around $15,000).

For a comparative pricing site -- ie. what other used booksellers are letting them go for, you can check out www.abebooks.com

Went to the "treasures" exhibition currently in Canberra (Australia) and saw the notes for 'Origin'. Most of them are long gone, and the ones that remain were used as scrap paper by his kids.

I'd hate to think what those were worth

(The items that got me were Mozart's Requiem and a 1939 Polish telephone book)

Don't know if such a site exists, but you can check out abebooks.com, which will tell you how much booksellers think they are worth.
