How do publishers decided what to make audiobooks for?

I know an audiobook isn't made for every book out there, so how is it decided what books to do them for? And how long, generally, is it until they're released?

The thing that got me pondering that is that I had a friend ask if one is going to come out for "Serenity" (the movie adaptation). Is there any news on such a thing that anyone's heard?
