Looking for a book "everyone" has read

Hi all,

I'd like your opinion on what book I should read next. I haven't been able to read much this summer and now that I finished some of my goals I'm on to the next - read a couple books that "everyone" has read.

Books like the DaVinci Code, Rich Dad, Poor Dad, etc... Non-Fiction / Paperback would be preferred....

So, what good book recommendations do you have that everyone has read?

Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad

Lord of the Flies - William Golding
Catcher in the Rye - J.D. Salinger
1984 - George Orwell
The Stand - Stephen King (or It)
The Harry Potter books

I would say that the top two that everyone has read would be the latest Harry Potter and The Da Vinci Code.

I read a lot, and I've never read any of the Harry Potter books. Read <i>Great Expectations</i> instead...

Fahrenheit 451 - One of my all time favorites

What about non-fiction books? Thanks!

Jurassic Park

Nonfiction is tougher. Once upon a time, everybody read Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic Wars. I thought it was fascinating. I liked Flags of Our Fathers a lot. But it's hardly something everyone has read.

I just looked at three online lists. The only book on all three was Autobiography of Malcolm X, but I haven't read it myself.

Check out 1984 or how about Ender's Game!

In my previous post I tried to think of some non-fiction books "everyone" has read but couldn't come up with any. Closest I could come was presidential bios and the like. Most people I know stick with their interests- I like math/science, my brother-in-law likes historical, others like self-help, etc.

I'll second Jurassic Park. The book is much meatier than the movie.

For fiction that not enough peoople have read, try Treasure of the Sierra Madre it has a lot of interesting stories within the story, and paints a fascination picture of the time and place.

For non-fiction, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil had tremendous popular appeal (don't let the movie put you off).

4th vote for Jurassic Park, sounds like a fiction winner.

As for non-fiction, Band of Brothers.

i've seen a bunch of people reading seabisquit and band of brothers (both non-fiction)
for fiction, try hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. after reading that, i've seen so much references in our modern day pop culture coming from that book that it's scary.

Catcher in the Rye
The Stand

Fiction: I haven't seen Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" mentioned here yet. Certainly with the movies, I've seen even non-readers give this a try. "Silence of the Lambs" (and its prequel and sequel) are books most have read.

Non-Fiction: I'm not so much of a non-Fiction reader. I like science, so a couple in that vein are Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" and Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time". I also like true crime, and a couple of my favorites are Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" and Norman Mailer's "The Executioner's Song".

Non-fiction - "Into Thin Air" by John Krakauer

FREAKONOMICS is new, popular, and an excellent book.

How about The Great Gatsby? Quality stuff. Or A Separate Peace?

spainlinx0 09-01-05 05:30 PM

I didn't realize so many people had read the Stand considering how long it is. Personally, I loved it and would also recommend that and Jurassic Park.

More along the classics line, The Old Man and the Sea, and Of Mice and Men. Both are very short and can be read in a few hours.
