Sophie's World - thoughts/theories

When I was in Corfu I read Sophie's World (Sofie's Verden) - this is a fantastic book IMO. It's got a great mystery story behind it but makes you think and educates you also (its about philosophy and stuff). I didnt understand much of it in places though! As some of the people (Kant? Berkeley?) I'd never heard of! ;)
I found Darwin/The Big Bang and the Greek Philosophers easier to grasp though :D
I'm not sure but I reckon Gaarder wrote the story a bit before Communism collapsed.

Anyone read it - maybe there are some Norweigan members here who read it in its original text? ;)
I give it 4-4.5/5 :)

Anyone understand the ending?

Spoiler:

Personally I think Sophie/Hilde Knag are the same person, or "Sophie" in the story IS "Hilde" OUTSIDE of the story in the "real" world.. Is the "story" the Major writes an alternate universe? Or is it a paralax (sp?) world (you know, like a painting within a painting within a painting.. etc).
