Humphrey's "Final Exit"

Hey people. Could someone use their superior search skills to help me find a copy of this online? The full text is online somewhere (it's a book).

And no, it's not to get ideas, it's for school :p

That's the book. One of my professors said the whole text is online but didn't have a link handy.

Um, Deb, isn't this copyrighted material? Most of the time when someone is selling a book for money, they expect to get some kind of compensation...

And if it is copyrighted, then we can't even discuss ways that you could obtain an online copy. (TOS)

Minor Threat 06-02-05 01:48 PM

Are you looking for a free copy?

GatorDeb 06-02-05 01:50 PM

As far as I know, it's not being distributed illegally. For example the Internet Public Library has tons of books. If you find it and it's legally available, please post the link.

Deb, other than your professor's assurances... what makes you think that this book is public domain?

Minor Threat 06-02-05 01:53 PM

I can't find a "free" download, sorry.

Because I've found other references on Internet availability, just not the actual link. They sell academic journals for $50 but anyone can go ahead and download most articles published out there, so it's not unheard of.

By the way something doesn't have to be public domain to be available free of charge. If the publisher and author agree, the author or publisher can distribute material. As I understand it, public domain means no one has rights to it and can be distributed by anyone. So a publisher and author could make a book available for free - let's say, to those who sign on to a University's website with a library card number and password in order to prove they're students - and still retain copyright over the book. So really public domain and free-of-charge availability are two different things.

NCMojo 06-02-05 02:04 PM

That's true, Deb. But do you have anything that suggests that the author of this work has made the book available for free?

Usually when that happens, there are a million sites that immediately make the work accessible and available... and the price for downloading copies plummets. If people are still paying $10-15 to get this book, the odds are that it is not legally available for free.

GatorDeb 06-02-05 02:11 PM

That's why I said... if you find a legitimate link, please post, it'll be appreciated :)
