A good beginners book regarding computers
I need some help finding an entry level book on working on computers/programs. I'd like something that gives the basics on a wide variety of topics so I can have a general understanding and then decide from there what topics are necessary/interesting to me. Thanks in advance for your help.

That's a very vague description. Can you give us more of an idea of what you need it to cover? The "... For Dummies" series of books could probably help you out (nevermind the title, they have a lot of good information).

I wish I knew. I want to be able to apply for an entry level IT position in a 600 seat call center. I have friends in the department but I want to be as self sufficient as possible.

The only other thing I can think of is doing some sort of basic introduction course to computers at a community college. I'm sure that would be leaps and bounds over any book.

A very simple intorduction
When I did my Computer Science degree we were all made to read, in our first week, The Ladybird Guide To Computers! We all laughed but it was an excellent introduction.
Another book, perhaps out of print now, was "We Built Our Own Computers". Another very good very basic introduction to computers. |

Hi there. We have a guy who does IT (hired from within). I'll ask him about books when I see him next. He pretty much deals with one thing: networking. That's the biggest issue. You have hundreds of computers trying to communicate with a server. Also, he has to come in at all hours. The computers don't know when you like to sleep. I work overnight and since the overnight shift has the least amount of people, they like to do upgrades at 3am.
I'll see if I can get some book ideas from him. |
Thanks for all the responces. I'll look into the books mentioned.
