Any Raymond Carver fans here
I studied Raymond Carver for an English class back in college (specifically "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love"), and since I was looking for something to read on the subway, I picked up "Cathedral." I'm loving it. The short stories are extremely real and pretty emotional.

Carver is my absolute favorite writer. The amazing thing is that his stories are so economical. He says so much in his stories with such sparse use of language. His characters are incredibly well-defined. I feel I know more about the characters in a 10-15 page Carver story than I do in most full length novels. All of his books are brilliant, but "What We Talk About When We Talk about Love" is my personal favorite. "After The Denim" may be the most beautiful story I've ever read.
Surely, we can't be the only Carver fans here! |
I'm a big fan of Carver as well. I discovered him about 5 years ago in college and I just wished that I had come across him earlier. I've used a couple of his stories in my high school English class, because he does such a great job of telling a full story in a relatively short number of pages. It's hard to find really good short stories that interest young people. Lately I've also introduced some of my students to Kevin Canty who I also enjoy, although some of his stuff is crude. One reason my students love it.

Hurray for culture in DVDTalk. ;)

I absolutely love the Short Cuts book that comes with the Criterion disc. His stories are so well-defined without being too psychological. I recommend the Criterion DVD to everyone, it exposed me to Carver and I appreciated the education.

"Cathedral" is one of my very favorite short stories.
 to Raymond Carver in general. |
Big Carver fan here. "A Small, Good Thing" is my favorite short story.

I like Carver too, but it's been years since I've read him, and I don't remember details of his stories.
If you like Carver, you might also like Ron Hansen and Richard Ford, and if you have a taste for Southern Morbid, William Gay. |
