The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes, Vol. 1

Anyone got this? Just ordered my copy. Looks very nice. This is all the short stories in chronological order with tons of notes, in two books. The novels will come out later in a similar package. |
I have the old Annotated Sherlock Holmes, edited by William S. Baring-Gould. Two volumes, all the novels and stories in chronological order of occurrence. Since the old edition was the one that figured out the chronological order, and wrote hundreds of notes, I'm not sure what's left for he new edition to do.

Read up about it on Amazon. Has a nice description about it.
|
I read about this in a recent edition of EW. It's on my Christmas list. :)
|
Well it's shipped and should arrive today or tomorrow. Once I have a chnace to go through it a bit, I'll post about it here. But from reading about it, Nick, this edition seems to be a huge improvement over the old Baring-Gould version, which came about 40 years ago.
Here's one article about this edition: http://www.ireadpages.com/current/sherlock.htm, and a link to the publisher site about it: http://www.wwnorton.com/catalog/fall04/005916.htm - what did EW write about it? |

Wow. Got this delivered by UPS yesterday evening. Poor UPS guy. This thing weighs a ton. They do say it's 1700 pages but the size, man! This is easily 10 pounds. And the quality of the paper adds to the weight as well. But so far it looks like the best version of these stories one could hope for. The font is neat, everything is laid out nicely, pictures and photos are plentiful and high-quality. Perfect two volumes. Cannot wait for the third.

Next November, apparently.

The novels are now up for pre-order with an 11/1 release date:
Buy.com: $33.21 Amazon: $32.97 http://images.amazon.com/images/P/03...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg |
I loved reading all the Holmes stories, too bad Conan Doyle didn't write more. My favorite one, I can't remeber the title, takes place in America and involved a lot of evil mormons, and only ties up in London at the very end.
|
I have read all the stories and I still have the complete Sherlock Holmes on my PDA and reread a story every now and then, but I'm really tempted to order a set of the Annotated books as well.
|
darkside, you definitely should! Pick up both the Short Stories and the Novels sets. They're just incredible!

<b>Are there any fans here willing to discuss any such non-canon Holmes material that they have particularly liked or disliked?</b> PS: the anti-Mormon story was A Study In Scarlet. This was the first in the canon and I have read that, after visiting Utah, in later life ACD was more respectful of the JC/LDS people. |
Just got this baby! Man is it great. I was also interested in the non-canon stories mentioned in the prefaces, when he fights Nazis, and meets Einstein, Freud, Count Dracula, Jack the Ripper, goes to Space, and all the other things.
|
I've read very little of the non-canon stuff, but a couple immediately come to mind; the first is Neil Gaiman's excellent short story "A Study in Emerald," which I won't spoil by going into. It's a very fun read. The other is a novel I read years ago, called Exit Sherlock Holmes, by an author whose name escapes me. It's a 70s novel that uses time travel and cloning to help explain Holmes and Moriarty, and does it with a completely straight face. I read one of the Holmes v. Jack the Ripper books several years ago, something with Whitechapel in the title, but I don't remember anything about it. Didn't Michael Chabon write a Holmes pastiche recently? I'd like to take a look at that.

They must have changed that, because it was when I ordered. And it was with the first set, because I got that with free shipping as well. Odd, that.
|
My preorder was placed months ago, with free shipping, and it too has shipped and I should have it in my hands tonight! Can't wait! :)
|
My copy arrived the other day from Overstock and it looks beautiful sitting next to Vol 1. (The outline of Sherlock's head is now complete).
|
It's the same, quality-wise, right?
