Are there any fantasy short story collections?

I know there are detective, sci-fi, amazing thrill, crime, and fairy tale collections, but are there any fantasy ones?

For starters, you could try the annual Year's Best Fantasy and Horror, edited by Ellen Datlow and friends. Way back, the two series were seperate, but after the 90's sounded horror's death knell and there were less stories to choose from, the two series were combined.

It's rare to find any fantasy story that takes place in less than three novels these days.

For Multi-Author collections... off the top of my head, I can think of Ellen Datlow's collections like "Snow White, Blood Red." Sort of fairy-tale themed deals. These generally attract a lot of high profile authors.

For Single-Author collections, I would suggest:

"Smoke and Mirrors" by Neil Gaiman

"Dreams Underfoot" by Charles de Lint

"Stranger Things Happen" by Kelly Link

As mentioned before, Ellen Datlow edits a lot of fantasy anthologies, as does David G. Hartwell. One of my favorite's is Hartwell's Masterpieces of Fantasy and Wonder , which though out of print, is often available on ebay]. (I especially liked "Green is the Color" by John Ford, and "Lest Levitation Come Upon Us" by Suzette Elgin Haden.)

Also, a lot of collections are part fantasy/ part scifi if the author writes sf in general. My favorite collection is Orson Scott Card's Maps in a Mirror. It was recently reprinted in paperback so you could get it cheaply. (I paid about $80 for mine since it was once rare and out of print. I do think the older versions have a section the new ones don't but I may be wrong.)

I highly recommend Legends and Legends II - two collections of short stories from fantasy and sci fi staple authors, and the stories are a good introduction to the authors' series, so if you like the short story, you can give the series a try.

Here's what came to mind when I saw your post: "After the King: Stories In Honor of J.R.R. Tolkien"

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...409930-3828853

I have a copy of the book, but haven't gotten all the way through it yet. I recall enjoying the stories I did read, though.

Over the past decade or so, Britain's Mike Ashley has made something of a career of fantasy compilations:

The Chronicles of the Round Table
Chronicles of the Holy Grail
The Camelot Chronicles: Heroic Adventures from the Time of King Arthur
The Pendragon Chronicles: Heroic Fantasy from the Time of King Arthur
The Random House Book of Fantasy Stories
The Mammoth Book of Sorcerers' Tales
The Mammoth Book of Great Fantasy
Fantasy Stories

Availability via Amazon.co.uk varies.

For a touch of nostalgia,
Ray Bradbury's "The Illustrated Man" and I believe "Dandelion Wine" are both short story collections that may fit this category.
