Laurell K. Hamilton's "Incubus Dreams" (Anita Blake)
Ok, based on my searches for Anita Blake stuff here, at least some of you know who she is.
So have you read the new book? I just finished, and I've got to say I'm ready to give up on this series.
The Anita Blake series started out so well....high action content, snappy dialogue, a bit of intrigue. It was a good Buffy fill-in.
But for the past 3 or 4 books, as

Wish I could comment, but lousy amazon have let me down with this book and it's lost somewhere mid-atlantic.
You are not alone though, if you visit lkhamilton.org there are lots of readers disenchanted with the series.
I re-read Obsidian Butterfly recently and although it's not my favourite storyline, I couldn't believe how much better it was than Cerulean Sins.
The thing is I do like LKH's sexy writing in the Merry Gentry series, but it completely overwhelms the things I used to read Anita Blake for.
If the books are not centered around a mystery anymore, but constant bonking what's the point?
TBH I thought she (AB and LKH) would be getting over this by now, or use it for background refernce to add colour and dimension. Making it the centre of AB's universe for 3 or more books might be realistic for the character, but it makes boring, repetative reading.
Like you I championed these books because of the startling occult universe and the amazingly strong main character.
With the character focussed on this one obsession we see little of the universe and the character has become the antithesus of what she once was.

My fiancee attempted reading the first Anita Blake book, Guilty Pleasures and its poor writing and trashy romance novel take on vampires was giving her giggling fits and moments of extreme eye-rolling. She's pretty much abandoned any attempt at reading it and will instead read Brian Lumley's Necroscope series.
The few bits of Guilty Pleasures I read came across as sophomoric and cheesy. Lugubrious passages detailing rippling biceps, the fashion accessories of vampires and her sex life. The whole thing read like the masturbatorial fantasy of Circe Nightshade from SNL's Goth Talk skit.

I enjoyed GP, and it only got better from there......unfortunately, the past few books have only been focusing on the sex, and man it is getting old. I'll give her one more book, and after that I'm done with her.

Just the same, part of me has to see the showdown between AB and Belle Morte (it has to come eventually). I only fear though that it will turn into some pseudo-sexual-mental battle instead of the butt-stomping it needs to be.
But first we'll have to go through a book about the

I'm torn on these books. Whenever she's not focusing on Anita having sex, I really like them. I like the characters, I like the plots. For the most part. I could definitely do without the sex. That's not the reason I'm reading these books. It could definitely be more of a background idea, IMO. Having said that, for some reason, the sex bothered me less in this book than it did in the last one. *shrug* Maybe I'm becoming desensitized.

While browsing at Borders and BN recently, we mentioned how bad the Hamilton books were and employees at both stores agreed that the books are atrocious.

Giantrobo - I recommend reading the first couple and see what you think. They aren't that long, and it'll give you an idea of what her writing style is like. Just imagine future books with more swear words and people having sex.

I'm really antsy to pick this one up since like everyone else i think they have been focusing more and more on the sex and less is actually happening in the series. The Merry Gentry books were ok because at the very beginning the role of sex was incorporated into the storyline. I just wish she had kept that the trashy series and this one a little more story oriented.... although I adore all the books with the Fae.

I read a couple Anita Blake books and both of the Merry Gentry ones. There's a line that Hamilton crossed in some of them that makes the sex boring. It's kind of ironic that when a book is all about sex, it's dull and not very erotic, but when it's blended with a story, it's hot.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I loved the series from Circus of the Damned thru Obsidian Butterfly, after that it seems she ran out of ideas and just made it one big sex romp. I want the Anita of old, if she needs sex to survive then do a half page sex up and get back to solving paranormal crimes.

what's really nice for me about reading LKH is that it is fluff reading, after reading something along the lines of War and Peace,it's nice to sit back, read a book that i don't have to think or concentrate on.
