1300 Page Paperback? Quality? (BONE)
Now that the Bone comic book series by Jeff Smith has ended, he is releasing the entire 55 comic book series as a SINGLE paperback - 1300 pages!
Now, the Harry Potter books are monsters at 900 pages, one has to wonder if the binding would work for such a big book.
Any thoughts?

We talked about this in one of the monthly comic threads. At $20-$25 I don't really care how it looks after I'm done reading it. I'm just happy to have the complete series in such a affordable package.

It's suppossed to have a reinforced spine, to help keep it together. From what I've read, Cartoon Books put a couple of copies into a dryer and turned it on. They held up to a full cycle.

I've read through the B&N Ultimate Spider-Man collection, which is 40 issues (plus various musings by Bendis and Jemas), and the spine on that held up fine. Of course, that's a hardcover.
I'm still trying to decide whether to get this. On the one hand, I already have up through the seventh collection, so I only need to buy 2 more collections. On the other hand, this collection looks like it will only be about $5 more than picking up two individual volumes, so it might be worth it just to have it all in one volume. Plus, my volumes 1 & 2 have a different trade dress than volumes 3-7, and I know I'm just anal enough that sooner or later I will replace those.

Well, I have volumes 1-8 all in hardback, so I guess I'll have to get vol 9 in hardback just to be complete.
but i was considering this as well.
vol 9 (both paper and hard) seem to be MIA, but maybe that's just because 55 just came out finally.
as for this copy - i still wonder what a 1300 page book is going to look like - seems strange.
but in that same strange sense, it'll be like we all have our own copy of Moby Dick to carry around with us.

The spine should be fine if its made as well as other large paperbacks I've seen. Clive Barker's Imajica. Some of James Michener's stuff. Dumas's The Three Musketeers.
My paperback copy of Hugo's Les Miserables is over 1300 pages and the spine is fine.
The key is to not break the spine while reading. I never allow the spines of any of my paperbacks to get creased. My fiance thinks I'm nuts, but my books last.

Looks like Scholastic is going to start up a graphic novel line. Their first release: "Bone" in color!
Great news. Scholastic will be able to market this title to younger kids in a way that the DM can't.
