I am going to risk overturning my original youthful enthusiasm and take a stab at the James Blish "Cities in Flight" collection of four novellas in one volume: I can vaguely recall reading one of the novellas as a schoolchild; probably in some (Hugo or Nebula?) anthology. If the copyright information is to be believed they originally saw print in 1970.

Blish was one of the Futurians, whose number included Frederick Pohl and Isaac Asimov. The books are said to have reinvented the traditions of space opera! My copy is published as part of the Orion/Gollancz SF Masterworks series.
