Samuel Shem: House of God/Mount Misery

Anyone in here ever read these books? I recently read House of God and am about 50 pages into Mount Misery. I did a search and didn't see any discussions of these, so I thought I'd start up a thread to see what people thought of them.
FYI- House of God is supposedly the book that the tv show Scrubs is based on. After reading it, I can certainly see the similarites, although they are quite different from each other, too.
One thing I don't get so far is that HoG was set in the 70's, and MM is set in the 90's, but the main character supposedly only takes a year off btwn books.
So... thoughts?
