X-Men question RE: Bishop
 

I just recently got back into comics. I'm still enjoying Strangers in Paradise, and to a lesser extent Bone. I want to get back into reading X-Men, as that was one of my favorite comics, I have issues from 122 and up. Now my question:

Did Bishop ever find out who was the traitor that supposedly killed Xavier? He thought it was Gambit, but it never went anywhere. I stopped reading years ago, so I'm really out of it.

New X-men is amazing & the comic that got me back into comics after a 4-5 year leave.

I bought an Issue of New X-Men, 114, when it began, I did like it, but I just didn't go back to the comic shop. Now it's back issues time. I just bought so many comics these past two weeks, it's not even funny.

I read X-Men from way back in the first Cockrum days through Byrne, Cockrum (again), Paul Smith, Silvestri, Lee, etc., etc., etc. and stopped around the Onslaught period when, in my opinion, things started to go downhill fast (or at lease, faster than before). I'm thinking of starting up again but I'm leaning towards getting Ultimate X-Men so as not to weighed down by all the crap history I didn't like the first time around and all the stuff I missed since then.

That's what I love about Grant Morrison's run on New X-Men: he's basically discarded all the old convoluted storyline and streamlined it to make it a lot more modern and accessible to new readers. I just started reading the X titles about a year or so ago and I've been absolutely hooked since then.

Actually...i've disliked Morrison's take on the X-Men [And i'm a Morrison fan.]. My previous post was supposed to be dripping with sarcasm. And now that I think about it...Austen's isn't that much better*.

A little off topic but...

What happened to Image and all their super hyped comics?
I noticed some went to DC, but where are all the crap books that Leifeld put out, and where is he?

Well, Spawn is still around (unfortunately), & McFarlane has nothing to so with the comic (or any comics) anymore. The only Image book that still has the same creative team to this day is The Savage Dragon. Basically all the other Image comics & Rob Liefeld (Wildcats is still around also) went the way of most fads & died out years ago.

Liefeld is trying to come up w/ money to finance his own new Youngblood mini-series that was suppose to come out last year but never did. Liefeld is the laughing stock of the comic book community. Image is still around though & going strong, now looking for Independant creators & bringing their independant titles to the mainstream.

I help run a comic book store, so I'm very knowledgable on all things comic book related if you have any more questions.

I dislike the new X titles as it feels so wrong and out of it. yuck

I like to sit and wonder what Battle chasers would have been like... if the damn artist every put down that PS2 controller and actually drew the comic!!

ah..the good 'ol days of waiting eighteen months between issues. danger girl premiered in 98 and since then we got a total of seven issues [discounting reprints & one shots]. that's the one thing I hold Image responsible for...late shipping. granted, Marvel/DC do it too but Image was the greatest offender.

Late shipping? what the hell are you talking about Wet Works shipped right on time... oh wait...


Man, out of the 7 damn issues of danger girl, how many stupid collection books did they release with an added bonus of a few sketches? -rolleyes-

It's cool. I'm actually nothing like the comic book store guy, (except for my vast knowledge of comic books), I'm only 22, have all my hair, & a girlfriend. I don't own the store, I'm not even there that much. I just do the ordering for the store & help out when I can. My friends own the store.

To add to some of the other responses did...

Image fell victim to the old addage that says "good friends do not make good business partners."

Greed and jealousy took over, and they fractioned off.

After the "newness" of the idea wore off, there was also the problem of fans noticing that books never shipped on time and in many cases were nothing more than cheap rip-offs of Marvel characters (that was mainly Liefeld's books).

Other problems were that there was no controlling influence in Image. Valentino seemed to appoint himself as the spokesman, and did more harm than good in his appearances peppered with profanities - including liberal use of the "f" word in front of children. McFarlane decided to start a war of the words with Peter David, and promptly got his ass handed to him. Erik Larson wrote the infamous "name witheld" letter to CBG, stating that artists didn't need writers anymore. McFarlane went on record saying that he knew he couldn't write well, and saw no need to learn how, because people don't like story, they want art.

Regarding the "traitor" that killed Xavier:

What happened was that Charles Xavier developed a second personality, a malicious being called Onslaught.

The recording that Bishop discovered in the future was incomplete. In one of the Onslaught crossover issues, we can see Jean making the original recording. The words that lost in Bishop's future make all of the difference.

(Now... I gotta wonder if that's how the story was REALLY supposed to go down, and if there really was supposed to be a traitor in the X-Men's midst...)

just thought i'd add a little amusing story:

i worked (about a year and a half ago) as an intern for a Hollywood production company that has a lot of to-do with comic books. one artist with which the company is/was associated is/was Liefeld.

i had the lovely task of driving down to Liefeld's house at one point where i met his trophy wife and him. the thing i found <i>most</i> amusing though, had to be the lifesize Badrock statue that currently occupies about half of his garage.

the entire aura i got from him was that of an unemployed poseur. funny how that is...

Todd hounded Peter into having a debate at the 1993 Philadelphia Comicfest.

Peter thoroughly destroyed Todd, to the point where more than a few people sort of got upset at Peter for being SO cruel to him. It became rapidly obvious that Todd never really planned on having a debate, this was just another publicity stunt of his... which angered Peter further, as he gave up plans with his family to do this only because Todd swore up and down that it was to be a legit debate to clear the air between them.

The moderator, George Perez, drew a picture that perfectly described the event... Hulk ramming Spawn head-first into a wall.

I've never seen a transcript of the debate published online. Even a Google search of *"Peter David" Todd McFarlane" Debate Transcript* couldn't pull one up. Narrowing the search field brought the resulting matches to the several hundred to several thousand range, and I wasn't going to search through all the irrelevant links.
