I haven't actually read any of these books, so I guess I'd better get started on a few of them. Anyone have any recommendations?

Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal, by Eric Schlosser
That's pretty good. (And he's got a more recent book - 'Reefer Madness' which may also be interesting.)

Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America, by Barbara Ehrenreich
It's OK but It's worth checking out the prologue/intro' (whatever) which highlights the authors approach.

"Nickle and Dimed" -- yeah I had to read it for one of my classes and now it's the required reading for incoming freshmen. Decent idea, but pretty worthless overall IMO. She's such a nutbag -- seriously, no common sense, sense of realism, etc.

Fast Food Nation was a pretty good nonfiction book. Also, if you are interested in something fiction, i really enjoyed Box of Matches by Baker. Super quick read and kind of touching really without being maudlin or feeling like emotions are being played with - also not a hokey uplifting book.
