"Taking the Red Pill: Science, Philosophy and Religion in the Matrix"

Picked this book up today, saw it on the shelf read the back and it "had" me ;)

Anyway, its a serious of Essays and what-not from various scientists, doctors, ect.. Each one looking at the Matrix and how is relates to Science, Philosophy, and Religion.

I'm only like 25 pages in, but already I'm amazed at what I'm reading. So f'n cool, I just had to share.

Great for the casual or compulsive fan of The Matrix.

The Matrix

What books inspired the directors of the matrix? What books did they read when making the movies?

Darren Garrison 05-24-03 09:41 PM

Probably lots of William Gibson...

Gibson's cyberspace is worth considering but in his works people are usually aware of the distinction between it and Real Life: one of the repeated questions of Philip K Dick's works was "what is real: what is human?". An idea similar to that of being asleep and dreaming that you were awake several times crops up in his writings. It should be noted that it is a philosophical point (Buddhist?) that has been around for a very long time.

not sure, i doubt it. however i took a gander at http://www.whatisthematrix.com and found no essays. perhaps a different site, but navigating that site is hard so I might have missed them.

either way, this book is a great read. i recommend it.

If you click the middle button in the 3rd column of the "Mainframe" window it takes you to Philosophy and The Matrix and has essays.

http://whatisthematrix.warnerbros.co...il_frames.html

is the link, but if you follow it it might be screwed up since they use all those frames and stuff.

sounds pretty good, I wonder how the book would compare to The Matrix and Philosophy, as this book seems good too.

When academia and skiffy worlds collide!

For anyone who enjoys "serious" lit-crit &/or papers on science fiction writings, in addition to various US-based publications (on which others better-placed can comment) based on my own readings of a decade since, the House Journal of the Science Fiction Foundation is definitely worthy of consideration:

http://www.sf-foundation.org/publica.../issue106.html

Admittedly it will not appeal to all but there's plenty to read on their site for free:

http://www.sf-foundation.org/publications/essays/

Plus, notice of some mostly in-house genre-related publications:

http://www.sf-foundation.org/publica...criticalworks/

I have no connection with the organisation other than, as I've said, a past and future subscriber. It is just that, when undertaking an unrelated search yesterday, I encountered their site and was reminded of a long held-intention to renew the sub/membership I let lapse in 1997 !
