Faulkner for beginners...?

So, I'm interested in reading a Faulkner book to see if I enjoy it.. I have never read more than a sentence written by Faulkner, so I am posting here asking for a recommendation on a good place to start...

Thanks!

I think DarkestPhx is in the minority as Faulkner is regarded by the vast majority of writers/English & Lit profs/etc to be one of the finest and most important writers of our time.

As I Lay Dying is pretty amazing. I'd recommend that. The Sound and the Fury is highly regarded as a masterpiece.

Now, yes, his writing isn't Ed McBain... you will need to focus and use your brain. If the novels are too much to begin with, try his short stories - they are just as good.

Here's a link to some SS collections.

BTW, this site is a great intro to Faulkner site. You can read general synopsis of all his work, essays and other things to help you "get it."

I consider you a very lucky person - you get to experience Faulkner for the first time!

I think that Faulkner gets a really bad repution because of people who have only heard about his reputation. He really isn't difficult to read, his sentences aren't convoluted (sure some are long but not every sentence is), and he tells fascinating stories. I would, like BoatDrinks suggests, start with a book like The Sound and the Fury/
