What's the Most Expensive Book You've Bought?

I'm about to buy my girlfriend a first edition copy of James Agee's Pulitzer winning novel A DEATH IN THE FAMILY. They fall in the $75 range...about $30 more than any book I've purchased for myself.

Is that nuts? Anyone else here spend that kind of money on a book you can get in paperback for seven bucks?

I bought "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" for about $125 on Ebay. There was only one printing and you can't get it anymore. I read it and then sold it back on Ebay for about the same I paid for it.

It's not crazy at all!

I bought a first edition of Michael Connelly's first book, The Black Echo for around $100. I've got a couple others that I paid around $75 for.

Oh wait...I think I paid $125 for a Lawrence Block first edition. (One of the early Matt Scudder books.)

Somewhere around $70-$75 for The Dune Encyclopedia.

Also just paid about $50 for a small book of Charles Williams' poetry.

Individually they're not much, but I have all six volumes of Little Nemo in Slumberland which cost $35 - $40 each.

The most expensive book I want is in London and is priced at 5000 pounds.

Mario Bava: All the Colors of the Dark from Video Watchdogs' Tim Lucas. 100 bucks. I pre-ordered my copy 2 years ago at the start of it's creation and it will be out this summer....so Tim says. I'll wait as long as it takes as it will be the reference tool on Bava.

plus those who pre-ordered will have thier name in the book!!

The most expensive I've bought was a leather-bound signed edition of Frank Herbert's Dune.

Let's just say I didn't get many other books that year.

Oooo. Textbooks don't count. I think my Electronic Devices and Circuit Theory was $130 used. But it was really part of tuition, like lab fees.

Hmm, a friend gave me a signed copy of The Tommyknockers as a gift...I don't know what it's worth, but I'm sure it's far and away my most valuable book.

The signed, limited edition of Poppy Z. Brite's Swamp Foetus. It's not the most I've paid for a book (I think I paid around $50 for it), but I've seen the sell for upwards of $200.00. Found a hell of a deal on it, and this was one of my Holy Grails for the longest time.

The most I've actually paid for a book... I haven't a clue. I have a lot of limited editions and such, but I can't recall at the moment.

$200 for a first edition of "The Hunt For Red OCtober". That was years ago...

I can understand why texts don't count. Books for my professional reference library regularly hit $100+.

The prices for the Stephen King Signed/Limited editions of the Dark Tower series are just insane. Is this some sort of record for such a recent book? Witness:

I suppose you have to bear in mind that you're also getting rights to buy the rest of the series directly from Grant.

Leatherbound, signed copy of "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card - paid $75, and was offered $300 within a week. Still didn't sell it, it's one of my favorite novels.

A signed, numbered copy of Stephen King's Six Stories. The second most expensive would be the Dark Tower: Gunslinger hardback First.

I have all of King's books in first edition (not necessarily the signed, limited editions, though).

I also collect Arkham House first editions, which can really set you back some coin.

Now that I am married and am carrying a mortgage, I mainly look wistfully at the books I want to add to my collections.

From a Buick 8 by Stephen King. Signed, numbered, limited edition from Cemetery Dance. Also signed by Bernie Wrightson (illustrator). I paid $250. It is being sold around $600 at auctions.
