I also am reading 2 books. I always do this. Horror Films of the 1970s from John Kenneth Muir is getting dug into deep today. it's a new beautiful hardcover and a great read. Orson Welles Interviews is the other...also hardcover. if I finish Orson, which I'm close to doing....I'll start the brand new release of The Devil On Screen-Feature Films Worldwide, 1913 to 2000.

this is my first day of visiting the book forum....so I'll let ya'll know that December/Jan was filled with two outstanding books as well. Spaghetti Nightmares-Italian Fantasy-Horrors As Seen Through The Eyes Of Their Protagonists and Spaghetti Westerns-The Good, The Bad And The Violent.

Right now i'm reading Myra Breckinridge by Gore Vidal. Have about 100 pages left of that.So far,a really good funny novel.

Also since the cable was out all week & i had no net access(since my brother kicked me out of the basement to watch dvds all night all week). I spent 5 straight hours late night finishing up See No Evil,a novel by the authors of Killing for Culture. It's about the video nasties uproar in the UK & it's aftermath.Really in depth, extensively researched & interesting. So it was time well spent since network tv sucks the big one & i barely watch tv anyways.

When finished with Myra,i'm going to finish up Crimson Kiss. It's a vampire fantasy novel. It's tough reading to books at once, since one book wins out over the other..that i put the 2nd one off until i'm finished with my current book.Thats what happened with this one.Great book, just i got caught up in other novels, lol.

Still i'm packed with to many novels to go through.Over a years worth or longer since i take my time as things keep interrupting me.

alyxstarr, funny you should say that, I just purchased Ghost Story which is a part of the Stephen King Collection (Books he recommends). also in the series is Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin and The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.

I definitely recommend KOKO by Peter Straub.

Yes, although I was aware of Peter Straub as a co-author of King's, it was King's discussion of the book in Danse Macabre that made me pick up Ghost Story in particular. He also talks about Hill House and Rosemary's Baby (among others) in the same chapter. (I've only skimmed that chapter, so as to try not to spoil some of the plot elements of the stories. After I've read all of the ones I'm interested in reading, I plan to go back and read the chapter in full.)

And even though I was a bit disappointed with the end of Ghost Story I did find Straub an interesting enough writer to check out more of his work, so I will keep my eye out for a copy of Koko. Thanks for the rec.

I highly recommend you watch the original version of The Haunting. A much much better movie IMO.

I will certainly add it to my list. I'll have to find a time when my roommate's not around, though, since she's not a fan of even remotely scary movies. ;)

Just Finished House Of Chains, by, Steven Erikson.

Damn, I cannot wait until the next book in the series which will be called Midnight Tides.

Speaking of Fantasy, has anyone picked up issue #305 of Dragon magazine that has the novella by George RR Martin in it??

The novella is called "Arms of the Kraken," and is an excerpt from A Feast For Crows.

Anyone know where I could pick up a copy?

Don't know what to read next. Ed McBain's Fat Ollies Book, or, Joe Lansdales Captains Outrageous.

Both authors are favorites of mine.

Guess I'll have to do that eenie meenie minee mo thing...

Finished William Gibson's Pattern Recognition last night. Very good, thought-provoking read.

Next up, Stephen King's Dreamcatcher. Need to get this one out of the way before the movie comes out. :)

The only downside is the original Haunting is not available on DVD yet. :(

Sorry about your roommate. ;) My roomie will only watch scary movies if I'm home.

I finished Swan Song which was better then I remembered.

I also finished both The Night Crew and The Empress File by John Sandford. I was a little disappointed with TNC because it was little slow, but TEF was pretty decent (a lot of characters to keep up with in that one).

Now I am in the middle of three books....

A Drink Before the War by Dennis Lehane. My first book by this author and so far I like his style.

Hell House by Richared Matheson. Can't go wrong with Matheson. I'm eager to finish this one and check out the movie with Vincent Price.

Some book my roommate told me to read. Generally I we don't like the same types of books because she reads girly stuff. However, this one I'm reading has a murder in the first ten pages, so I'm liking it. Also, the point of view is from the dead character who is in heaven. Pretty good so far. However, my roommate will probably tell me it's an Oprah pick after I'm done reading it. :)

*edit* I think the title of the book is The Lovely Bones.

I've managed to get her to watch a few. But mostly during the day, with plenty of lights on. (Whereas I'm the type who tries to get scared by scary movies. When I watched Blair Witch Project, I picked a night I was home alone (at my parents' house), turned out all the lights in the whole house, and opened wide the back door, which sits almost right next to the 32" TV with surround sound. Even then I only got scared because of a few resemblances to a camping experience of my own, but at least I tried ;) .)

I think you're either thinking of The Legend of Hell House, which does *not* have Vincent Price in it but *is* based on Matheson's book, or House on Haunted Hill, which *has* Vincent Price but is *not* based on Matheson's book. I've seen the latter, and as long as you take its age into account (i.e. don't expect much from the special effects) it's a pretty good movie. Very campy.

 Or I could tell you now... Actually, I think it came out after she had stopped doing her book club thing, but I'm sure it would have made her list.

Seriously, though I usually avoid Oprah picks, everybody I have talked to has said this is an amazing book.

I just bought The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum. I like the movie quite a bit. I also picked up Haunter by Charlee Jacob, which is a horror novel. The cover looked pretty neat.

Flynn 03-13-03 01:48 AM

Breakfast Of Champions - Kurt Vonnegut.

djmont 03-13-03 01:18 PM

Current Read: Michael Connelly's Lost Light--The latest in the superb Harry Bosch series. I think this is the best detective series currently being written.

Last 5 Reads: Denise Hamilton's Sugar Skull, Thomas Keneally's Lincoln, Jeffery Deaver's Vanished Man, C.J. Box's Savage Run, John Lescroart's First Law

Next in the queue: J.L. Abramo's Clutching at Straws, Steve Hamilton's Blood Is the Sky, Harlan Coben's No Second Chance, Edward Wright's Clea's Moon, and Glenville Lovell's Too Beautiful to Die.

Is that out????

I thought it wasn't out until April 1!

djmont 03-13-03 02:35 PM

You're correct, it's not out until April. I've had the ARC for some time, though. I'm just finally getting to it. I've read about the first 1/3 and it's excellent.

I am thinking of The Legend of Hell House with Roddy McDowell. I knew I screwed up someplace. :)

Definitely not my typical read (I tend to either go suspense/thriller/mystery or horror), but I don't feel like I'm wasting my time with this book either.

Man, I admit, I'm jealous. :D

Cedar 03-13-03 05:58 PM

The Lovely Bones has to be a chick book, but it must be a great one since it has been in the top three on the best seller list for two thirds of a YEAR now! My wife only had to look at the outline of the book to know she couldn't read it. She would be crying through most of the book!

Speaking of Michael Connelly, I'm up to Trunk Music in the Bosch series. Thumbs up so far!

Cedar, they only get better. Unlike Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta
series (which is just suck now), Bosch is always growing and the books are always good IMO.

LarLar 03-14-03 08:18 AM

Daniel Silva's The Confessor - this assassin series is really growing to be one of my favorite quick reads.

djmont 03-14-03 08:20 AM

I enjoyed the new Daniel Silva quite a bit, too. He's a terrific writer. Gabriel Allon is a great character.

Giantrobo 03-15-03 05:48 AM

X-men 2 novelization and Imajica....

veritasredux 03-16-03 09:25 PM

Lost in the Cosmos by Walker Percy
Dead Man's Walk, McMurtry
Left Hand of Darkness, UKL
:thumbsup:s across the board

Samuel 03-17-03 04:54 PM

Gerald's Game By Stephen the King.

Very good so far.

 That is tied in to Delores Claiborne in a weird way. There is also a part in that book that gave me goosebumps (which was odd since it's not 'scary' in King's typical fashion).

I just started Hot Springs by Stephen Hunter. I've managed to misplace my copy of Hell House so that one is going to have to wait until I finish Springs.

Amator 03-17-03 08:15 PM

Just finished Jayber Crow by Wendell Berry. A wonderful story of an orphan who becomes the barber of the rural town where he spent his early years. Lots of iconic characters, a lament of losing the young to the cities, and a mysterious hopefulness at the end that is sublime. Also I recently read Escape Routes: For People Who Feel Trapped in Life's Hells by Johann Christoph Arnold, which was also very good book dealing with grief and loss.

Currently I'm reading The Diary of a Country Priest by Georges Bernanos. Looks to be a fantastic novel.

cineman 03-17-03 09:44 PM

A Writer's Tale by Richard Laymon

Fantastic book.

Shadow77 03-17-03 09:48 PM

I just finished reading the Complete Sherlock Holmes. Really good read.

I'm working on Nelson DeMille's Plum Island right now, with Edward Rutherford's Sarum after that.
