Carter Beats The Devil

Would be interested in hearing anyone's opinion on this book. I'm interested in getting it, but if it's bad nostalgia I'll pass. Has anyone read it here?

Waiting for Jason...

I looked forward to it before it came out and bought it immediately upon release. I absolutely loved it, both as an avid reader and a magic fan. The characters are well-drawn and while they lead rather fantastic lives, they have believable, engaging arcs. It reminded me a bit of THE ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER AND CLAY stylistically. I can't recommend it highly enough.

You perfectly echoed my sentiments. After I finished the first section, I immediately thought of Kavalier and Clay... not only is Gold's style similar to Chabon's but there are many similar themes.

The quality of writing is excellent... very engaging story and characters.

Highly recommended... and I can't wait to read more by Glen David Gold.

Hey Bishop, glad to oblige!

CARTER BEATS THE DEVIL was one of my favorite reads last year (along with Faber's UNDER THE SKIN). It's a biographical novel that has an infectious sense of mystery and adventure. You really get caught up in Carter's rise to fame, and the magic acts are great fun. The ending has an over-the-top quality that the book actually earns. I definitely look forward to Gold's next.

Reading KAVALIER & CLAY now.

I really enjoyed it too. Reminded me a bit of the work of Paul Auster. I really like books that combine real historical figures with lots of fiction when they're done as well as this. And all the magic bits are a joy to read. It's definitely a case where the history is integral to the plot rather than just "bad nostalgia."

Let me also add my praise for CARTER. Great book, lot's of fun, and as many have mentioned, very much in the vein of KAVALIER & CLAY.

Did you know -- the art on the cover of the hardback is an actual poster used by the real life Carter to promote his show.

Yes. I have two original three sheets and two eight sheets from Carter. I got this book when it came out but still haven't read it.
