I bought the British hardcover 5-book set from Amazon.ca and have been very happy with it. While the books aren't technically the British editions, they're virtually identical, except the copyright page. Just like watching foreign films with subtitles, as opposed to an English dub, I wouldn't want to read a British book in an Americanized version.

I've been meaning to pick up the UK edition for over a year now. Maybe I will just ask for them this Xmas.

Another thing to consider. Having an unknown UK word or phrase in the US edition would disrupt the reading flow for the kid. Example: 'Boot'1 instead of 'trunk. A kid would stop and wonder what the heck a boot was (besides footware). Even I wouldn't know what the boot meant.

There is still UK terms in the books. Soccer is still referred to as football in one of the books.
I think footnotes would be a great solution!

1 Boot = trunk

Re: Finally!

Remember these?

Well, on a lark I checked the Bloomsbury site yesterday, and lo and behold, they had listed new hardback editions of the Potter books, with the above artwork. They were published on Oct. 4th! Woot. So I headed over to Amazon.co.uk and ordered a set, pronto. Finally! They are mine!

Anybody else interested? Head to Amazon's page if so.

I don't think there is anything wrong with changing a couple of words so kids in the US won't get confused. (especially when the two words have totally different meanings in one culture) Its not like these books are trying teach kids the differences between cultures. They are only trying to entertain people. Pretty hard to be entertained when something makes no sense.

Example: Changing Boot to Trunk. If I read that "Ron's dad put the luggage in the boot", I'd think he was somehow trying to put it in footware, not in the trunk of the car.

Same thing with Torch and Flashlight. Any American will think of a stick with fire on it when they hear torch. I'm willing to be that if British kids were reading an American story and read that one character picked up a torch, unless the story leaves no room for modern technology, they will think a flashlight is used when it should be a stick on fire.

I own the hardback editions of all five in both UK and American editions.

I guess I have to be a wet blanket and say I don't care for the artwork of those adult versions.

It's not like I'm calling for a ban on the Americanized editions, I simply want the English ones for my own reading pleasure. It's a personal want, I prefer hardback books, and I prefer more sophisticated artwork... and therefore, I'm very happy that the current editions have finally come out.

Woo hoo!! The package arrived today, and the books are schweeeeet! I think it's an extremely good lookin' set, and can't wait to finally start reading the series.

Seriously, if anyone is thinking of getting the set as a gift for a young adult or even someone older, I would highly recommend the set. Very smart looking.

Here's the box, which is pretty sturdy, and looks good;
