Dune Messiah

I am about to read Dune Messiah. I tried to read it before, but it didn't captivate me. It's time to give it a second chance. wish me luck.

Giantrobo 11-18-02 05:15 AM

What a co-inky-dinky!

I had starting reading "HERETICS OF DUNE" a few years ago and I couldn't finish it and I started reading it again a few weeks ago.

I'm liking it better this time and I may even get to "DUNE CHAPTERHOUSE"

bishop2knight 11-18-02 07:25 AM

I'm on God of Dune, the best book since the original. The two between weren't all that exciting.

Crap, so he's not really dead, then.
I finished the first Dune last night, btw.

If you've only read the first book, it's not the Leto you're thinking about. This one is Paul's son.

The son was in the first book, but was (supposedly) killed.

I think Paul had another son that was killed not Leto II

Leto II became what I posted in that pic...at the end of God Emperor, something big happens to him.

Leto II:

Spoiler:
Paul's first son is killed during a raid in "Dune". The Tleilaxu offer to create a ghola of him in "Dune Messiah". Paul refuses because he knows that they really just want his genetic material -- can create as many as they want, assassins, programming, etc. I think Leto II is born in "Dune Messiah" or somewhere thereabouts. At the end of "Children of Dune" he undergoes the beginning of the process that leads to "God Emperor".

Read all the original Dune books then read Dune: The Butlerian Jihad.

It's good, it's damn good. They should have never even bothered with the first 3 prequels.

With all due respect, although your opinion of "BJ" may be on target....or off for that matter....either way, some of us thouroughly enjoyed the 3 prequels.

Sorry you wasted your time with them.

Mutley Hyde 11-20-02 04:57 AM

I couldn't get past the first or so chapter of the second Dune book. And after Dune was such a great read. :( I've always meant to give it another shot, but I'll probably have to read Dune again before I do.

Eric F 11-20-02 09:47 AM

Where did I say not to read anything?

I'm not saying the prequels were bad, they're just not as good as Jihad. I wish they had written the Jihad series first, and from what I heard they were.

I didn't know you took your reading so seriously. A million pardons.;)

Me too... As far as I know, you and I are the only people here that own the Dune Encyclopedia. :)

Not quite, but I need to crack mine open a lot more often to make it worth the $$$ I paid for it.

I got mine for somewhere around 10 cents. It was at a library book sale about 12-13 years ago that sold the books for 10 cents per pound.

Mine is odd, because it is a hard cover, but doesn't look exactly like the ones on Ebay. It doesn't have any writing under the "Compiled by Dr. Willis E. McNelly" on the cover. I don't see anything inside that would appear to make it a later edition. I wonder if the libraries got an earlier or different version.

Sounds like one of those books that the library would send out to be hardbound -- like most library books. Virtually all the books in the campus libraries are hardbound, though you can tell many were originally paperbacks.

I have a copy of the Dune Encyclopedia..

What do I win?

Giantrobo 11-25-02 11:48 PM

To be honest... since the "HOUSE TRILOGY" came out, parts of the DUNE ENCYCLOPEDIA have become non issues.

i.e.

1. How Lady Jessica was conceived

2. What happens to Anural

It doesn't seem that way, but I'll have to take a closer look now that you say that. How can you tell if my book has been redone?

Yeah, I do too. Where are our damn prizes?

Goblincat 11-27-02 08:20 PM

OK, I looked at my copy, and there is no way that it could have ever been a soft cover. It even has the $19.95 price on the inside of the dust jacket.

Could some one check this with theirs...

On the back inside part of the dust jacket it says that mine was published by G.P. Putnam's Sons. Is that what everyone else has?

Giantrobo 11-27-02 08:55 PM

Large paperback here
