There's supposed to be an incredible used bookstore in downtown NYC. I think the name is The Strand.

The Strand is really incredible. It's one of my favorite places to go when I visit New York. I've never seen another store like it anywhere.

That's the only one I've heard of...
Are there any others?

The Strand is in a world of its own. Miles of shelves lined with used books. They have so many books they rent them out by the shelf-foot to movie and TV productions that need them for library scenes and such.

For new books, St. Mark's Book Shop on the corner of 3rd Ave and East 9th St, one block north of St. Mark's Place. Fairly large, specializing in left-leaning political books and the arts, with a nice sized fiction department as well and lots of literary criticism. Some of the more popular counterculture authors have their books kept behind the information counter because they have been shoplifted so often.

If mysteries are your thing, check out Murder Ink, up on Broadway.

For a pretty comprehensive, though by no means complete, listing of independent bookstores in NYC:

It's sorted by category.
