Read'em now, because you will certainly want to read them again at some point. The upcoming film trilogy certainly looks impressive, from the images and trailers I've seen, but as with any book, it will be a challenge, if not impossible, to fully film the book. LOTR purists will surely wring their hands over elements of the book not represented 'accurately' in the films, but the movie(s) will stand on their own, as do the books. As entertainment.
"The Hobbit" and the LOTR trilogy are classics. Don't wait to enjoy them.

A book is not the same if you've seen the movie first. Read them now, the films can't possibly do them justice.
