I just read Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salanager

I liked the book, I thought it had a lot of funny parts and liked that it wasn't a cliche coming of age story or anything, but what I can't understand is everyone say it's the greatist novel and that it will change your life and blah blah blah...
I also really liked the end of the book when he just said, I dont wanna say anymore and the book sort of stopped there.

Again I liked it a lot, but what was the big deal? I've thought the same about these "classics" I've read:
Of Mice And Men
The Scarlett Letter
To Kill A Mockingbird

I'm going to go pick up and read either war in peace or moby d!ck next.

Question about the catcher in the rye:

Spoiler:
At the last chapter when he keeps giving clues saying his brother is visting him and mentions the wing and the psychoanalysts I'm guessing he's in a mental institution, right? but it also mentions that he's going back to school in September, so why's he there?

I don't love or hate Catcher in the Rye; I'm completely indifferent to the novel. I don't understand the heaps of praise and love for it, but I do not think the story is without merit either. I much prefer Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
