Good short fiction collections?

I'm looking to produce a short film some time soon, and I am looking for a good short story to adapt. I'd rather it be something published recently, and something either in the tragic or seriocomic vein. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Incredible, I entered this thread to recommend Raymond Carver's short story book, "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love." I doubt his estate would ever allow his work be turned into a film though. I can't see his stories working in any other way than on paper.

Carver is SO damned depressing though......how about Tim O'Brein - "The Things They Carried" not that story, but one story in the book could work well

maybe "The Pugilist at Rest" , the author escapes me.....itis a fiction/essay which could make for an interesting film

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

However, I decided it would be better if I went with a more light-hearted tone, so all those depressing Vietnam War anthologies are out. Sorry

Instead, I got David Schickler's Kissing in Manhattan, which is exactly what I'm looking for. Nevertheless, thanks for the help.

BoatDrinks - This is just a private project, for my own edification. I don't plan to run into any copyright problems
