Robertson Davies?

Anyone here ever read any books by Robertson Davies?

He's a Canadian author known primarily for three seperate trilogies dealing with various characters and their often eccentric qualities. Incredible writer, does a brilliant job at making his characters come to life, and manages to pepper his stories with mythological types, Jungian symbolism, knowledge of opera and architecture, without lording his expansive knowledge over the reader.

Anyway, I'd be curious to hear if anyone else has heard of/read any of his books. I'm trying to find books by other authors that are similar to Davies but am not having much luck, so I'd like to get opinions from anyone who knows of any comparible authors. I could go back and re-read all of his books, but I'd like to try something new!

Re: Robertson Davies?

I have never heard of him but he does sound fascinating from your description. I'm noting down the name so that my brother and I can decide who is going to buy them for whom!

As I've not read RD at all any recommendation based on just a description will be risky but Haruki Murakami is highly acclaimed.

I was wondering: if you could summarise RD in three or four words perhaps the thread title could be changed to get more people in with their suggestions based on those four words....

I liked the Deptford trilogy. It's all I've read.

If you like Davies, you might like Walker Percy.

Nick Danger- I've only read one by Walker Percy, I'll have to get some other. Any recommendations?

benedict- Good suggestion about the thread title, I'll have to do that at some point. I'll also have to look into Murakami, haven't heard of him before.

If I could recommend a good starting point in your RD journey, you may want to check out the Deptford trilogy mentioned by Nick Danger. Also try "The Cunning Man". Either would serve as an excellent introduction to Robertson Davies!!

I liked The Thanatos Syndrome by Percy. I just now looked it up on Amazon, and they put the spoiler right in the top description.
