You can only get it used, but in addition to some of those mentioned already, I liked The City Not Long After by Pat Murphy.

Generally I'm a sucker for any post-acopalyptic books or movies...my wife thinks it makes me morbid.

SiberianLlama 11-08-04 04:55 AM

I haven't seen this already listed, and I don't know if it exactly qualifies as "end of the world" but Nightfall by Isaac Asimov is just an amazing book that's kind of on topic. Definitely check it out!

Abelkems 11-08-04 07:59 AM

Dark Advent by Brian Hodge is one of the better post-apocolypse books I have read, if you can find it.

Seeker 11-09-04 04:53 PM

Wow - blast from the past on one of my favorite book genres!

There are so many books based in the "post-apocalyptic" environment. If folks aren't aware, all of Terry Brooks "Shannara" books take place in one, although the books have little to do with that subject, except for the occasional encounter with past "future" technology.
The Shannara books are included in the exhaustive - six-year old - Usenet list to which I've linked above!

While not the focus in the first few books, The Dark Tower series by Stephen King focuses in on the end of the world in the more recent, final 3 books.

How about Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? :)

BiMonSciFiCon 01-26-05 07:03 PM

How about Logan's Run by William F. Nolan.

RoQuEr 02-09-05 04:41 AM

Z for Zachariah by Robert C. O'Brien

pdinosaur 02-10-05 05:45 PM

i'm gonna second Good Omens.

any book that makes you laugh out loud is worth a read.

so sad i saw it was being made intoa movie by terry gilliam, then removed from imdb's site. :(

justbarelymovin 02-26-05 01:41 AM

I apologize if this has already been mentioned as I admittedly haven't been through the entire thread. No doubt that it has, but I'll just reiterate how great this book is: Good Omens but Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett. ;)

Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World
by Haruki Murakami

but also not really ;)

themovieguru 04-03-05 01:35 PM

I've written a screenplay called the "First War" and it deals with the end of the world and I am also starting a book with that very same theme. That screen play took me forever to write and flesh out. Still not quite how I want it but at least its done.

Thanks GUYs /Gals ..For these wonderful recommends if I need them , BIG CHEERS
:)

BiMonSciFiCon 04-17-05 07:48 PM

Damnation Alley - Roger Zelazny (later made into a movie of the same name)

Peperfatso 04-22-05 03:37 PM

There's a book called "The Wrath of God" by Robert Gleason. It's a quickie sci-fi light read that might interest you.

The_Cube 02-12-06 08:10 PM

I'm currently looking for some post-apocalypse books. Has anyone read The Rift by Walter J. Williams? I just ordered it from Amazon in the buy 3, get 1 free deal. I'm wondering if it will be any good. If anyone knows of any books that are very similar to Cell by Stephen King,The Postman or 1984, I would appreciate any suggestions.

Cosmic Bus 02-13-06 01:33 AM

Oh wow, just noticed how long ago this thread was originally made. :)

In case the poster (or anyone else) is still after reading material, I'll toss Jose Saramago's Blindness into the ring. It's closer to the "micro-society" idea than apocalyptic, though there could be tinges of the end of the world scenario depending on how you approach things. It's also one of, if not my very favorite book.

dave-o 02-22-06 10:07 PM

I don't think anyone mentioned this one yet, but I really liked "Just a Couple of Days" by Tony Vigorito. It is a very humurous and creative look at the end of the world. If you like Vonnegut you will like this one. Check it out here:

Cusm 07-10-06 10:43 AM

I have read through the two threads and I am looking for a good micro-society story. I have read the Stand and Swan Song - Swan Song is one of my favorite reads. I have narrowed it down to these titles and would like to get some feedback as to which ones I should start with.

Lucifer's Hammer - Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle

On the Beach – Nevil Shute

A Canticle for Leibowitz – Walter M. Miller

The Day of the Triffids - John Wyndham

Mister Touch – Malcolm Bosse

Malevil – Robert Merle

Earth Abides - George R. Stewart

As the title suggests, it really happens in WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE, the Philip Wylie/Edwin Balmer classic. This was long out of print, but it has been reprinted in a single paperback volume with the terrific sequel AFTER WORLDS COLLIDE.

Cusm 07-24-06 12:55 PM

Okay I read "Lucifer's Hammer" and loved it, although I wish it was longer. I started "On the Beach" and hated it, I could just not get into it. I also poured through "I Am Legend" and enjoyed it, although I did not know it was only a short story. I am really wanting to read some more post-apokyleeptik ;) micro-society stories. I am getting the "Postman", "Alas, Babylon" and "Warday".

Don't know if it was already mentioned, but you may try "Footfall" by the same 2 authors. It's similar in style with an Alien Invasion instead of a Comet.

al_bundy 07-30-06 09:16 PM

I'm surprised no one mentioned The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Cusm 08-15-06 12:18 PM

I am still looking for the Tom Clancy of micro-society/end of the world books. One that has a ton of detail.
