why sorcerer's stone in the US for harry potter?

sorry if its been asked before...

why is it called socerer's stone in the US? and in the movie, do they refer to it as the sorcerer's stone? or philosopher's stone?

i've never read the book and i saw the movie in canada where it was called philosophers stone.

Haven't read the books, nor seen the movies, but it's changed for American audiences because "professor" does not have the same meaning in the states. I believe it's dubbed in the different versions.

ah, explains it all to me.

as i understood, the philosopher's stone was an actual alchemist dream so it made total sense to me while sorcerer's stone didn't but i can see how an american movie studio would want to change it. its a shame it was dubbed into it.

thanks for the the info. i'd want to get the canadian edition, i guess if the dvds are different...

I think you'd have to blame the American publisher (Scholastic Press and its imprint, Arthur A. Levine Books) for the change in the first place. (And isn't it ironic that a publisher with the name of Scholastic would do this?)

I'd think the movie studio wouldn't have much choice but to use the American title after it was so well established.
