Book(s) Recommendation Needed for Long Trips!

Hi all-

I'm going on a 6 week international journey on trains, buses, and planes. I'm going to be doing a lot of reading -- but usually when I travel I bring a bunch of magazines to keep me occupied. I'm more of a magazine/journal type of reader.

Can anyone recommend some interesting books dealing with technology, gadgets, mobile computing, etc that won't bore me because i'm more of a short-length reader?

Thanks for the recommendations!

Great short little book by Neal Stephenson called "In The Beginning Was The Command Line". He's one hell of a writer and it's a very entertaining, informative (if short) read.

House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski is defenitely... interesting. If you want a different sort of read with all sorts of twists (literally) and brain-rending reading then I'd suggest checking it out. I've never read anything like it... You'll need at least three bookmarks though

If the concept of The Stand is to your liking, I would also recomend Swan Song by Robert McGammon (sp?). Another post-apolyptic book that is very good.

*Almost forgot:

The Alienist and it's psuedo-sequel The Angel In The Darkness (title may be off) by Caleb Carr. Both very good crime novels that take place in the 19th century.

I've had some good luck with books which require you to slow down and get used to the language. These are also pretty long.

Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds -- MacKay.

Look Homeward Angel -- Wolf

I've also used big, dumb novels like Tom Clancy. They don't require as much concentration, so if I'm tired I can still keep reading.

The book I read during Christmas vacation was The Black Book of Communism, but that probably wouldn't go over real well with Chinese customs.
