www.OTRCAT.com has great oldtime radio stuff - lots of MP3 listening on one CD. For starters, buy one of their Sampler disks to get an idea of what's available.
Besides listening to MP3's on MP3 players, you can also use your computer or even buy an MP3 compatible CD player, and many DVD players will also play MP3 disks.
Also, www.AudioBooksForFree.com has a wonderful selection of older works performed by professional actors. Their Sherlock Holmes recordings (which they've made availale for free on Project Gutenberg) are amazing.

I have a subscription right now. I've had it for just over a year & have been happy with them. My iPod is full of books & I listen to them while working. I don't know how much longer I'll keep it though. They have lots of stuff I would like, but have only the abridged version. I wish they had more unabridged stuff. I can't understand anyone wanting an abridged book.

I've been an Audible subscriber off and on for 5 years. I have stopped a few times just to catch up on books. They usually have good deals for signing up.

Its an excellent service, the book prices are a steal and they support a lot of different players including the iPod.

It is easy to convert the books with Goldwave and for those asking you can easily set up Goldwave to cut the books into segments and even set it up to find the silences to do the cuts in. You don't need any other tool besides Goldwave to do it.

Agreed. I don't do abridged books.

I've been using netlibrary.com for the last year or so. They are great, everything is unabridged, and it is free thru my library.

I've just started with audiobooks, and so far, I love it.

I had a free trial with audible that went well. I downloaded three books, and I am about through. I think that the deal now is two books a month for $21.95, or one book and a periodical for $14.95 (not sure if this is US or Canadian funds). Is there any better deals out there?

Most of the books that I am looking for seem to be there, but one is not. "Saturday" by Ian McEwan is not listed when I look for it at audible, but it is available at Amazon.com. When I click on the audio download version, it directs me to audible. What's up with that? Is this a common thing?

I just logged into my Audible account & searched for "Saturday" the book you mention is the first one to come up. In fact they have quite a few books by that author.

Could it be because I am in Canada? It definitely isn't there when I search. I get five books by McEwan.

Just used an anonymous proxy server to search Audible for Saturday and I did find it, so it does look like it isn't available to Canadians for some reason.

So anyone have any idea how I can get Saturday? When I log on with a proxy server, I can see it, but I can't access it once I try to sign up. It is really pissing me off. Can anyone help me out?

Maybe Amazon published its availability ahead of the actual effective license date for release at Audible???

Try contacting their customer service to see what's up. The one time I needed answers to something they responded fairly quickly.

I read/listen to only unabridged as well but there is one exception to that. The Wheel of Time Series by Jordan. I would read/listen to an abridged version of that and not an unabridged. His writing style is far too drawn out and long and boring for my taste, you could easily cut over half of the series to date out and not lost a dang thing! :)

Well, I managed to make it through the first one unabridged, but never did finish the second. I just don't care for his series, not sure abridged would help. ;)

I would be interested to know how it gets decided what gets tossed in the abridged version. I have seen some books where the abridged version is actually less than half of the unabridged.

The Historian is on audible in the abridged version, and it is over 11 hours, so I am thinking that there cannot be too much cut out. I might get it anyway.

I'd guess an unabridged version of The Historian would be 40-60 hours (most other 700 page books are that long) so at 11 hours a lot would have to be cut. There is no unabridged version on CD or tape either.

That sounds pretty high to me. The new Harry Potter is over 600 pages I think and about 18.5 hours. Ditto for some of the other books that I have seen around.

You're right. I was thinking about stuff liked Atlas Shrugged, but forgot just how long that book is. My copy of The Fountainhead that I'm readin right now is about 60 pages longer than The Historian & the unabridged audio of that is 31 hours so it would probably be closer to 18-25 hours unabridged.

Guess I just can't imagine that book abridged at all.
