dune books: prequels or originals?

I've been purchasing the new "prequel" Dune books (anderson/herbert), with the new one coming out tomorrow (house corrino). But I've only read the original DUNE, and no sequels or prequels.

Can someone recommend the best order to read these? I mean, should I read the new ones then the old ones, thus reading them all in timeline order. Or should I read the originals first, get the feeling of the way they were, then read the new ones?

Any suggestions?

i've only read up through the third book of the original series, "Children of Dune." everything i've read about the prequels says that the reader should read at least those first three books of the original series before starting on the prequels.

i own "House Atreides," but i'm not too hopeful on its quality, as i generally find Kevin Anderson to be a subpar writer.

I have only read the original Dune books and not the prequels (I planned to soon) but I would think you would want to read the originals first then move on to the collaborative prequels.

My office mate has read them all and he says to read the prequels first since this will give you more background when you get to the original series.

I loved the first three - after that the fun stopped for me.

Too much beating the same sick horse.

Couldn't agree more. God Emperor was just plain boring...I kept waiting for something to happen...and what the hell was up with the Fish Speakers.

Heretics was ok...how many times do we need to see Duncan Idaho though.

I started reading Chapterhouse and stopped.

In my opinion House Atredies was better than the last 3 Herbert books...I have House Harkonnen but I haven't started reading it yet.

Dune: House Atreides is such a ripoff of Metropolis, it's not even funny.

Ah come on, they're not that bad. Pretty decent if taken on its own. Of course nothing can stand up to the Dune series.

I've read them all, and I'm thoroughly enjoying the prequels. Read them in the order published.

I read House Atriedes and loved it...I'm reading House Harkonnen and I'm loving it.

I will wait for the PAPERBACK of House Corrino. (I'm cheap)

The new books DO change SOME DUNE history(Jessica's mother and some characters seem to have had the ages changed to fit the new series i.e. Stilgar and Liet) but for the most part it explains how and why in an entertaining manner.

IN the Original series, I was only able to get as far as GOD EMPEROR...which I liked.

There's some stuff alluded to in the prequels you'll miss if you haven't read all the Dune books.

While "God Emperor" is my least favorite of the original series, I highly recommend checking out "Heretics of Dune" and "Chapterhouse" as they round off the series very nicely.

When in doubt, go with the publication order.

Tuan Jim,

Was GOD EMPEROR the one where Leto II(Paul's son)
Spoiler:
becomes a human sandworm?

BTW, I just finished DUNE: HOUSE HARKONNEN and it was pretty good.

Whats with all these new Dune Books???

are any of these new Dune books worth reading or is it just Herbert's kid exploiting his Dads name to make some bucks for himself???

Do a search in the book forum here at dvdtalk. There are plenty of threads started in the last couple of months that detail everyone's opinions on the books. Mostly, you'll find that they are decent, but don't compare to the originals.
