Best Harry Potter Book?

So, what's the best one in your opinion?

renaldow 08-18-01 10:03 AM

The first one. All the others were too derivative of the original work.

movielib 08-18-01 10:28 AM

Goblet.

They just keep getting better, richer and more mature.

BTW, the last choice in the poll is funnier than "Twikoff".

I had to go with the Goblet, although I loved the Prizoner of Azcaban as well. The Goblet however seems to address more serious issues. When I was reading the first three books I felt like i was reading children's books (although I enjoyed all of them immensely). The last one while very entertaining felt more like an adult type of book to me.

yeah...i'll have to agree with most of the others in that i enjoyed the Goblet more...

reading children's fantasy that is such well-written is very refreshing in my opinion...

i can't wait for the next installment...

Adults read these?

I know more adults that have read them than I do kids. These are very well written and easily transcend an age limit.

I've been thinking about reading the first one.. I'm not a big book fan but every once in a while it's nice to have one, specially when I'm on the crapper a lot :p

Anyway, which book was the very first? I wanna begin at the beginning :)

jjamesc 09-19-01 06:27 AM

The first book is The Sorceror's Stone (or, if you're in the UK, it's Philosopher's Stone).

Second is Chamber of Secrets; third is Prisoner of Azcaban (sp?), and fourth is Goblet of Fire.

All excellent. I'd agree that Goblet is the best, if only because it was darker and more "adult".

I think it's "Prisoner of Akzaban." But it's true, though these books may have originally been intended for younger audiences, they're really suitable for any age. Kind of like the best of Roald Dahl's works.

Heh. After reading Terry Pratchet's Discworld series you'll never look at books like Harry Potter the same way again. They take themselves a little too seriously... ;)

I'd vote, but I've only read the first one (bought it Monday, finished it this afternoon). Gonna go buy numbers 2-4 this weekend.

Seeker 10-03-01 09:11 PM

Read them all, waiting for the next one, but the first is still the best. The second and third seemed to almost be a rehash of the first book, and I almost quit.

Luckily the fourth book (the second best in the series, IMHO), went off in a new direction and, indeed, was "older", just as Harry was older.

Nefarious 10-04-01 10:29 AM

I just finished the entire series for the second time. The 2nd and 3rd books are much better on a re-read. You see little nuggets here and there that make better sense.

alice1983 10-26-01 12:57 PM

All of my friends had read these 4 books, so i tried them.
They are the best books i have ever read.

"The Prisoner Of Azkaban" is my favourite.

AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO CRIED AT THE END WHEN HARRY WAS READING THE LETTER FROM SIRIUS BLACK????

Scarecrow 10-26-01 08:53 PM

Doesn't the fifth book come out soon?

In her most recent interviews she's said she's currently writing but will give no timeline. Some have indicated as far away as next July :(

I'm hooked on this series and also agree this series transcends the perceived age limit. I thought book 3 started off pretty slow (and was long winded), but really finished very strong. It was my favorite of the first 3. I'm now half way through the 4th, and so far, it is far superior to the other 3. Much more sinister and there's a lot more to it (more complex plot).

Aghama 11-06-01 08:50 AM

I'd have to say the 3rd. If it weren't for the gaping plot holes "Goblet" would probably have been my favorite.

GOBLET OF FIRE!!!!! So dark, so exciting... i've said it once and I'll say it again... this book is the Empire Strikes Back of the Harry Potter series... Dark, dim and terrific...by far the best of the series... although 3 is so damn good too... I read them so quickly, i think of 3 and 4 as one continuous story... those two are the gems of the series...by far... can't wait for 5... 4 was so good, i cried when i finished, cause i knew i had no more Potter to read... so i started again with Philosopher!

I just finished Azkaban.. so I voted for that, as it is AWEOMSE!!! I was thinking "should I even read the fourth book? it can't get better than this hehe.." but from the looks of this poll and the opinions of my friends who have read it.. it DOES get better.. I'm on chapter 4 of Goblet right now..

Wow.. I am already counting down the days until Thanksgiving 2003..

NitroJMS 12-09-01 04:28 PM

I personally like Goblet of Fire the most. It was simply the most mature and most-fleshed out of any of the novels. Can't wait for Order of the Phoenix!
